It’s easy enough to find on Google but I’m scared to death to use any of those sites with out knowing anything about them. (Last time I tried to download something from an unfamiliar site, I got “Delta Search” downloaded into my computer. It was a pain in the ass to get rid of.)
I don’t mind paying either. Any reputable site would be appreciated.

For what platform? Mods may not like the quasi-legality of this thread. But if the file downloaded is a zip and contains an .exe it is probably bad, otherwise good if it is of the same extension as the platform (e.g. .smc or .sfc for SNES). I don’t know of any possible vector to infect with those.
There are also non-download versions that can be played in your browser.

I don’t know about PC ports, but the NES version has been ported to Nintendo’s Virtual Console. You can download it to a Wii, Wii U or 3DS.
I have it for Virtual Console on my 3DS and I have to say, I really enjoy playing NES games on it. The Save State feature is there to help pull you through difficult spots, or you can ignore it, if you’re a purist.
It sells for $4.99 on 3DS in North America.
