I'm looking for some advice re PayPal

I signed up for PayPal a few months ago but have not yet used it.

I now wish to purchase a particular item and have it shipped to me in Canada. But, before doing this, I just want to make sure that my PayPal acct is working OK. I want to avoid any embarrassment from trying to purchase a product only to learn there is some kind of problem associated with my Paypal account or with the information that I used to register my PayPal account.

I did everything the PayPal people told me to do including verifying that two small deposits they made to my account both went through satisfactorily.

I hope that someone reading this thread may be able to advise me as to some business and/or product I can purchase and have that product shipped to my home. I’m not really fussy what method is used to ship the product. It could well be the mail or UPS or any other method.

Can anyone suggest a company who does lots of shipping to Canada? Also, if you could care to recommend some kind of product that sells for approx $10 or less?, I sure would appreciate that.

Wait, so in order to avoid the embarrassment associated with trying to buy something and pay for it with Paypal, you want to first…buy something and pay for it with Paypal?

Just buy the original thing. Paypal is pretty famous for being buyer-friendly, often to the consternation of sellers. If something goes wrong (it won’t), contact them and they’ll help you fix it.

In my above post, I asked for a recco on some kind of product just to order something that people have purchased often and that it has been shipped often without any problems.

It may sound a little odd to ask for people to suggest a product but I’m looking to avoid any kind of trouble. I thought a paperback book might be a good choice. But … whatever. I just want something that I can be relatively sure this company has shipped many times before and that it has shipped very often without any problems

Thanks. To answer your question, I don’t care about being embarassed by ordering a product from some “test” company. Once I see that it works OK, I will order the product I want from the actual company with which I want to do business.

I want to draw as little attention as possible to my purchase. To help explain why, you might think of someone ordering porno magazines. That is **not **what I’m trying to order. But, I would just like to avoid drawing attention to this transaction if possible. I hope that will help explain why I’m trying to be discreet about it.

We’re all paying attention now.

Don’t worry, at this point everyone is imagining something that’s almost certainly worse than what you’re actually ordering. Me, I’m thinking it’s a Disney-themed dildo of some kind.

Ha. Ha. It’s not you I’m worried about. I don’t mind telling you it is a course in becoming a locksmith and also a kit of picks (lock picks). I hope that explains.

I just don’t want it on the record with my government that I ordered a kit of lock picks. I hope you understand.

It is not legal in my city to walk into a store and buy such a kit unless you can produce a license that proves you are a bona fide locksmith. But, it’s easy to buy one from the Internet.

OK, so it’s not about embarrassment so much as anonymity? I’m assuming you gave Paypal some fake information, otherwise you wouldn’t be so worried about whether the purchase was going to work. That does complicate things.

So, yeah, buy a cheap paperback book and see if you end up in jail. I recommend some Nancy Drew or perhaps a nice Hardy Boys.

Good idea. (all except for the “jail” part  )

Thanks very much.

RealityChuck might have some suggestions as well. Something about Oaming, I believe.

And we all know you’re ordering a Real Doll. It’s cool. They’re pretty.

You know the sender has to declare the contents on international shipping, right? Canadian customs is going to know what is in the package.

How will the test purchase satisfy what your concerned about which is the shipping? Paypal is just a payment processor, they don’t do shipping. The seller arranges the shipping, which will likely be different between your paperback vendor and your lock-pick vendor.

Also you realize that anyone googling “lock picks Canada shipping” will now be directed to this thread, don’t you, along with “Disney dildo porno”.

As others said, guy something cheap on EBay and use your PayPal account. Maybe start out buying something from a Canadian seller.

Another option is if you can get a doper’s PayPal account e-mail address, then you can click the “Send Money” link to send them 50 cents or whatever to make sure it works.

But really if you’ve gone through the bank account verification process then you should be fine. Will you be using your bank account to fund the transaction? If you are paying from your bank account, just simply make sure there is enough money in there.

If you are paying with credit card, keep in mind that the default payment option for every PayPal payment will always be your bank account. Every time you make a payment you have to pick Other or whatever (forget the exact wording) and pick your credit card.

That’s about the only gotcha with PayPal.

Well, good thing he didn’t use his real name for his usern…

Oops.
