PayPal thinks I'm a security risk; freezes account.

No shit! You know what’s also frustrating and inconvenient? A link that that says “Learn how to remove this limitation” but the linked page doesn’t say a fucking thing about how to remove the limitation! Now I get a “permanently limited” notice. What the fuck is this shit? A month of not learning how to remove the limitation and you cut me off just like that?

Sure, I can still update my account information, add money to my account, add a card, add a bank account, send refunds, and use PayPal logos in my auction listings or on my website, but what good does that do me? I’m not a seller! I’m permanently unable to send or receive money! Hell, I can’t even close my account! All because your stupid security thought I have a second account or something.

I didn’t. Fuck PayPal security.

Well, stop buying used eBay comic books from Al Qaeda.

You didn’t follow a link from an email, right? (Because scammers send out emails that look like they’re from PayPal informing them that their account has been frozen, then send a link. Trouble is, it’s not Paypal but a page that captures your username and password…)

If you log on to PayPal and it’s frozen, then why not click on the “Contact Us” link on the bottom and either open up a dispute or call them directly?

'Course not.

Tried that. It’s like they deliberately make resolving limitations as difficult as possible!

Finally ended up tracking down a customer service toll free number via Google and called that. I was told to, in effect, use one of their competitors.

I had this happen once and called their Customer Service and had it resolved pretty quickly.

They probably ran a random scan and “Skywatcher” was a suspicious name.

Can’t be too careful these days, eh?

YES, THIS THIS THIS.

I got an email a couple of days ago titled “Your account has been limited until we hear from you.” Not being an idiot, I opened a new browser tab and nagivated to PayPal myself and attempted to log in from the main page. At which point I was informed that yes, I had been randomly selected as part of a security sweep, so I was going to have to update my password and security questions, confirm my emails, etc.

Except, here’s the kicker. THE PROCESS IS FUCKING BROKEN. I confirm my bank account info, enter a new password, enter new security questions, and confirm which emails I’d like to stay associated with my account… and then as I submit the last stage, I’m taken to a page that says my request can’t be completed. Trying to log in just takes me back to the password reset stage. Trying again from a different browser (as in separate application, not just a new instance of the same browser) starts the entire process over again, from the first step of confirming my CC/bank account info.

What the fuck, PayPal?!

And yes, I did use their retarded “contact us” link. Guess what they haven’t replied to yet?

My husband was also informed recently that there was suspicious activity on his PayPal account. He wasn’t too worried, since he doesn’t have one.

ETA: I hate PayPal and their obnoxious, grabby ways. I don’t see any reason why I can’t use my VISA card to pay for things like I have done for the last decade, with no problems and with extra security and the ability to dispute purchases.

I got into a similar situation with Paypal recently, although I haven’t even used it much of late. (Just say no to e-Bay!)

I tried to solve things online & eventually sent off an angry, frustrated e-mail. Then got a call from a live human the next day & he explained that everything had been settled & my account was just fine!

Yes, we got caught in some kind of overall security check. (How many horses had already been stolen before they closed the barn door?) My experience was clumsily handled but things worked out.

Paypal is about as annoying as it gets. I’m not currently having problems, but I know I’m just lucky, I’ve had problems in the past, it was hell to get them resolved. If my actual bank was behaving as badly, I’d find another so fast it would make your head spin. But Paypal has an effective monopoly, but hey, anything a corporation does is all right, eh, libertarians?

PayPal did this to me a while back, all I did was open a new account under a different email address.

If you don’t like Paypal you don’t have to use them.

If someone asks you to pay via Paypal, tell them Paypal sucks and ask to use alternative payment mechanism.

Lots of people find Paypal to be convenient enough to be worth the hassle.

If you really dislike them so much, why don’t you just stop using them? That’s what I did.

If you don’t like the roads, you don’t have to use them.
If you don’t like the libraries, you don’t have to use them.
If you don’t like the USPS, you don’t have to use them.
If you don’t like your local cable provider, you don’t have to use them.
If you don’t like your utility company, you don’t have to use them.

If it’s not clear, I think you should shut the hell up.

If you don’t like Shot From Guns, you don’t have to read her drivel.

Wait, I’m confused. People can easily put me on ignore if they don’t like me. So either you’re an idiot, or you think that I’m *so essential *to this community that it ceases to have *any function or purpose *if you can’t see what I write.

So, um, thanks?

I had a PayPal account for about 10 years, and since then I’ve changed email addresses, moved, gotten married, and changed bank accounts. When I tried to change from my maiden name it said it needed all this stupid proof and would take days… Whatever. So I waited until I got new credit/debit cards and just canceled the old account and started a new one. Took 5 minutes. Of course while I was canceling it wanted to know why I didn’t just use it’s “handy” name change service… Um, maybe because it would literally take over 100x the time and effort to do so?

Note I said “didn’t”, not “don’t”.

Because, shithead, there is no other choice. It means eBay is off limits because it’s against the rules to pay with anything else. Google Checkout, the only competitor, is a joke, and no website uses it. You can’t just call a website and have them take an alternate form of payment. The real world doesn’t work that way, despite what you apparently learned in Econ 101.

Stop lib-trolling.

I was making a routine transaction through PayPal a couple of days ago and they refused my payment, giving no reason. I’ve been using it for years with no problems, nothing had changed. No suspicious payments have been made, I never click links from Emails.

I rang my bank instead of PayPal and they told me my account had been flagged by PayPal for security reasons. They filled in a form, asked me some routine questions and made a phone call while I was on hold. The problem was resolved within 5 minutes.

I’ve yet to receive any form of communication from PayPal as to why they randomly froze my payments.

Serious question - is there anywhere on the web (besides eBay) where you can’t just pay by credit card? Yeah, I know, not everyone has a credit card, but IMO you’d be far more limited by not having a CC than by just not using eBay.
I’m not a compulsive online shopper, but I do my fair share, and everything is by credit card. Except for the very rare case where I want to send some money directly to someone’s personal account, I never use Paypal anymore, since I haven’t used eBay in five years.
