I'm meeting Joe Cornish tomorrow! (Adam and Joe, Attack The Block, Tintin)

I’m very very excited. I’ll be attending an advance screening of Attack The Block with the director/writer/comic Joe Cornish and the fantastic lead actor John Boyega. Being American, I’m not familiar with Cornish’s Adam and Joe work, or Tintin, but I’ve already seen Attack The Block twice and it’s going to be one of my favorite movies of the year. It’s an ultra super low-budget movie, but to me it’s a lot of fun, has a lot of heart, the acting is top-notch and the direction is totally solid. It may or may not do well in theaters, that’s hard to predict, but I think it’ll be a cult movie once it’s out on DVD/streaming. I thought it was an instant cult classic the first time I saw it and that was only reinforced when I saw it again. Cornish is my new Director To Watch now.

Regarding Tintin, I know it’s not his creation. I mentioned it because Cornish co-wrote (along with Steven Moffat & Edgar Wright) the screenplay of Steven Spielberg’s next movie The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. I’ve never been exposed to Tintin but I know it’s very popular in Europe. I was going to see it anyway, but now I’m even more interested in seeing it.

I didn’t include a trailer link for Attack the Block on purpose. I went in knowing absolutely nothing about the plot, and I’m glad. All I’d heard about it was that the specific South London accents used by the characters were very VERY thick, to the point where some doofuses floated the absurd idea that the movie should be subtitled before being released in the US. When I saw it I didn’t know what the fuss was. I didn’t understand everything, but I understood the context perfectly. The 2nd viewing made a lot of dialogue that much clearer. It has a lot of great slang and word usage that I loved even on first viewing. Believe!

I am a recent convert to Adam and Joe, they are fantastic fun. I don’t know anything about Attack the Block beyond what I’ve seen in the trailers, and the general positive review buzz. Joe seems like a funny creative guy, and if Tintin is as well received, he has a hell of a future ahead of him.

Joe is nearly exactly the same age as me, so a lot of his more obscure pop culture references are exactly the same as mine, even though I live on the other end of the planet to him. It’s almost strange to hear him say the same things I am thinking.

I’ve been an A+J fan since they had a Channel 4 show about ten or fifteen years ago; I think most of it was taped on a camcorder.

They have a great radio show on 6Music which is on hold while they pursue other projects…so I guess that’s why you are meeting Joe - for the other projects. I wish them well but I want them to keep on with the radio show! I love it!

I dunno if the podcasts are still available on iTunes but I recommend it. Hilarious.

Didnt know they started the Tintin adventures (I guess it could easily turn into a franchise) with Secret of the Unicorn. Weird choice.
