So what’s new, you may say.
Well, what’s new is this:
it’s the first time I’ve gotten a call from a headhunter - which has paid off. My situation at work wasn’t particularly pleasant: while I do believe this company has good intent, the two bosses I’ve had in these 7 months have been quite bad. The first one lied in her CV, claimed to have 5 years of experience when it was actually 5 weeks, she couldn’t do her regular “teammate” job much less be the team’s leader; the second one doesn’t understand “loyalty” or “truthfulness”, so of course he can’t encourage the first.
Also, the medical situation back home is pretty bleak. Mom and the bros are ok (although married-bro is on the edge of a nervous breakdown), but the list of people who are in worse health now than 7 months ago includes: my nephew (born in october, kidney problem that shouldn’t be too serious but you don’t know until you find out); said nephew’s grandpa (lateral amyotrophic sclerosis, sorry if I misspelled it); my grandfather (had a stroke, is recovering much faster than anybody outside his family would expect, we know he’s made of stainless steel and grandma’s tougher). Grandma has actually asked for help for the first time in about 60 years.
Oh, and I’m worried about my health too. I have these little things that have happened to me on and off since I was 15 (dizzyness, eyesight dissociation, right leg starts trembling “just because”…); I have gone as long as 2 years without a bother, but between September and December I got it twice: in the last two months, a whooping 6 times. Methinks it’s time to go see a doctor, but we’re “on location” an ocean away from home. No way I’m going to the doctor here, simply because if whatever it is takes long my medical data will be dispersed and I’ll have to get every procedure done twice.
We’re going back for Easter (90-day stay without a visa), so I intended to ask my boss’s boss to replace me ASAP and stick me somewhere Back Home. I’m good at documentation, for example, and ours is spread all over the place; there’s a part of the country where the company wants to open a new office and I speak the local language…
The offer I’ve got is for 1 hour away from my hometown. Far enough yet close enough, if you know what I mean. The salary would be better, I wouldn’t get many of the perks I have now but those come with the “international project”, I wouldn’t be getting them with my current employer if I was back home.
In theory, I could not say a word (we’re all so nervous and so anxious to get back that my nervousness wouldn’t look out of place), just get on the plane, and when we landed hand my laptop over to the boss saying “here, this is for my replacement”. But I have a good enough opinion of my boss’s bosses to actually ask them whether they want to make a counter-offer or not, and if not, well then, the sooner we start making sure that everything I know is well-documented the better. I know it is, but the boss would never believe it ex-coworkers from other jobs have congratulated me in amazement that the notes I left them were so easy to follow that they could take over my job in a jiffy.
I’m nierrrvoussss!
