The “Red Delicious” is a demimisnomer. It is undeniably red, and quite attractive - if you need to photograph an iconic apple, that is your strain. But as far as being delicious, I’m afraid the developers of this apple were either greatly misled or had questionable taste.
My vote goes to Fuji, a juicy, crisp and delicious apple for eating in hand.
I don’t understand the hatred that many people have towards the Red Delicious apple. There is nothing wrong with them. However, the best apple, by far, has got to be the Honey Crisp.
You’re right, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Red Delicious, if you don’t plan on trying to eat them. Every single Red Delicious I have ever tasted, at any time of the year, from any source, has been mealy and dry. The orchard back home didn’t even grow that variety because they said it didn’t taste good enough.
I used to like Delicious apples. Or at least I thought I did. The when class trip we went to orchard (30 11-year-olds running amok climbing trees – that was a good idea) and I ate MacIntosh’s. Then I realized I like Delicious apples only because those were the ones my mom always bought.
Wow did my world changed when I discovered there are so many varieties! My favourite is still Granny Smiths because I like sour stuff and they’re a bit tart.
Don’t like Delicious now at all.
Granted, Kat said, the taste seems to have been bred out of them. They just don’t taste… “right” anymore.
That is exactly the problem with them; the growers kept selecting based on looks, and forgetting about taste, and so they have progressively become more and more Archetypical Apple and less and less edible.
I used to WORK there!!! And they sell REAL red delicious apples–the kind that STILL HAVE FLAVOR! (and are crisp & juicy–not mealy! red delicious get mealy if they’re OLD!)
I used to “make the donuts” too…(can’t tell you how many ZILLIONS of times I heard THAT line…) and the pies…& I’ve bottled cider too…yum…now I want to take a trip back to MA…
