Braeburn, Fuji, Macoun, Empire, Gala on occasion, Spartan, and a couple years back I had some weird new apple strain that kicked, but I cannot remember the name.
It is strange to me that we are nearing 50 replies and no one has commented, re: the OP, that Rome apples are not generally considered to be “eating apples.” That is to say, they don’t taste very good raw, and never have. They are excellent for baking, applesauce and many other purposes that involve the application of heat. But raw? No, definitely not.
Grocery stores should write such things on their pricing chalkboards. “Fuji Apples $1.50/lb - Juicy, great for eating!” “Rome Apples $1.19/lb - Delicious Baking Apple!” With so many different varieties available, it can be confusing and hard to remember which names go with which uses.
Fuji apples are fuckin HUGE!
Pricing chalkboards? What century are you living in? I haven’t seen a chalkboard in a grocery for 25 years.
See Lib’s post, #4.

They’re not written on with chalk anymore, but every grocery store I’ve been in (and I was only born 21 years ago) has had signs in the produce department that are supposed to look like chalkboards that someone painstakingly drew on.
Whatever you do, Do Not Buy any apple labled ‘Arkansas Black’. Nasty, mealy apple with a tough, waxy, bitter skin. What is the point? Food as torture? My FIL used to buy these all the time. I never saw him eat one… WTF?
Braeburn. Excellent choice. My clear favorite.
How 'bout that??!! Where have those Winesaps gone? I used to eat them quite regularly. I haven’t seen Criterion apples for awhile either. They had a very short season, but the ones I had were awesome. . .crisp and sweet.
My current favorites are Fuji (they aren’t all huge, but some are certainly), Pink Ladies, and Honeycrisps.
Actually the Honeycrisps are VERY similar to what I recall the Criterions being like. . .name change maybe
Love apples! Love them
One of the reasons I love living in Washington!
