honey crisp = best apples ever

I just ate one, that’s how I know. what’s your favorite apple?

Honeycrisp. They really are the best apples ever. And the best part is, since I go to the University of Minnesota, they show up all over the place.

Your thread title says it all!

I assumed somebody would like something else.

when I was a kid we ate crab apples by the handful (up in the tree) - the first couple made you really wince, they were so sour, but after that they tasted good.

so maybe we can just talk apples more generally. it’s the season, after all.

I have recently found a love for Gravensteins.

Honeycricp for me, too. But they are hard to find around here, and expensive when you do.

For basic apples, I prefer gala or golden delicious over red delicious.

Cortland for me

Honeycrisp is the apple that rules all others.

But I also like the Gala apples - they’re close.

Pink Ladies, Jazz and Pinata are also good.

I am partial to Winesap and Suncrisp. I like Honeycrisp too, don’t get me wrong. But they are not my all-time favorites.

I keep trying – I even had one yesterday. But the Honeycrisp just doesn’t do it for me. My current favorite is Fuji, and I’ve always loved Granny Smith. I also like Pippins. But the best apple I’ve ever had is something called an Opal, apparently a cross between a Topaz and a Golden Delicious. They were briefly available in the supermarket last year, and I need to start searching for them again.

Just for fun, an article comparing Opals to Honeycrisps.

I would love to try an Opal Apple.

in my 20s I lived in Mpls and have fond memories of shopping at the Lunds in Uptown or the Byerlys out in St. Louis Park.

I remember walking to Lunds in the rain and when I got to their parking lot a kid with a giant umbrella came out to shelter me into the store. then after shopping I was escorted back to the edge of the parking lot. I remember he seemed puzzled by this “walking” since all their other customers drove there.

Honeycrisps are generally my favorite for eating out of hand, but we found some amazing varieties when we went apple picking a few weeks ago. The Arkansas Blacks were fsntastic, along with another apple that was almost a golden brown color.

Granny Smith remains the best pie apple.

Empires and winesaps right off the tree if possible. Crisp, complex and full of flavor.

I like various kinds of apples cut up in a fruit salad, but for just eating out of hand, it’s gotta be Mackintosh. Mmmmmmmm.

I had a thread on this a while back:

Cox’s Orange Pippin, closely followed by Granny Smith’s.

I havn’t heard of most of the ones mentioned in the thread. I just googled the pippin to find it’s from my home county!

I love me some Honeycrisp. But yeah, expensive!

I recently discovered a new-to-me apple that’s not really new, called Fireside. When I first cut into it, I was dismayed, thinking the interior was discolored and the apple beyond its peak. Apparently, that’s just how they look. It’s sweet but with a nice acidic tart note as well. I read that they make good pie and dehydrating apples, too, so I’ll be playing with them this winter.

Macoun. Yum!

Honeycrisps are my absolute favorite apple, but they’re really expensive here. I only get a few per year. When I can find good looking Pink Lady apples in the store I buy a bunch and eat 7-10 per day.
