And I’m freakin’ out! I’ve been training for the past 12 or so weeks. I ran a solid 10 miles a couple weeks ago. But for the past couple of weeks I’ve been having some knee and shin issues. I’ve started taping my knees before runs which has helped, but my shins just started bugging me a couple days ago. Plus, I’ve still got an ragin’ case of poison oak from my run last Sunday. I am spending today stretching, kicking back and hydrating for tomorrow.
You’ll be fine, just be careful with the knees. Don’t be afraid to bail if you knees give you too much trouble, there will be other races, knees are two to a customer.
You ran 10 miles two weeks ago, good enough. You race on your fitness of 10 days ago and a 10 mile run in practice means you can go 13 under race conditions. Good luck.
Can I ask you to elaborate on what the bolded means?
lezlers, I am totally jealous! I want to run a half marathon! I think I will try to this summer. For my knees I like to do a yoga child’s pose to stretch, but I’m sure you have stretches that work for you.
I did a half last summer, even after my ITB started giving me trouble. In retrospect, it was probably a mistake as I ended up walking over half of it. I did, however, finish, so yay me! It took about three and a half hours, when my finish time would have been anywhere from two hours fifteen and two and a half.
Good luck, take it easy. The goal for the first one is to try and finish. if it hurts too much, stop. There is always another race.
I finished! 2:36. Considering my goal was to finish under 3 hrs, I think I did pretty good! Knee started bugging me a little at about mile 8, but not enough to actually stop. Go me!
Thanks, guys! It feels really good (especially the part about me and my couch for the rest of the day, waiting to enjoy the cherry pie my fabulous boyfriend just baked from scratch…)
I’m walking my second half marathon on June 5 (if life doesn’t intercede; that’s still in the air), and I’m signed up for a regular one in September, though I plan to run/walk it, hopefully in a ratio of 5K/1 mile. So far the most I’ve run is (officially) a 5K in 34:01 and (unofficially) 40 minutes (don’t know the distance). So I have my work cut out for me. But you’re an inspiration!
