Feb polar view, 1992-2013, the period the papers are discussing, that show a cooling trend for large areas of the NH winter.
You can clearly see the colder regions, and it’s starting to look like they may be dominating the winters.
The same for all winter. The warmer pole and the colder mid latitude areas show up clearly. Note it isn’t just Siberia that shows a multi-decade trend. A lot of the US and Europe show up clearly.
The period 2002-2013 shows it well.
This is what the research is about. is it an unexpected CO2 induced cooling? The sun? Something else completely? Something is happening, there is no doubt any longer.
Look at the summer trend for the north pole.

You can tell it’s old, cause it uses 2013 for the trends. Using another year of data, you can easily see the boreal winter trend using global land data.

the warming is obvious, even as the trend goes down
The reason the trend goes down is the boreal winter, if winters were flat, not doing anything, the warming signal would be obvious, the annual data would still show global warming
The reason it does not, is the winters, which are trending much colder

Most of the current sea level rise is from thermal expansion the oceans. Glaciers and ice caps melting is a very small part, but yes, sea levels are rising some places, and it’s one of the most serious issues regarding climate change.
The Maldives are an example of low islands at risk. You can tell how worried people are about it,by looking at the new expensive resorts being built there.

There is no doubt, none at all, that we, meaning human kind, have unbalanced the CO2 levels, putting more CO2 in the atmosphere as volcanoes would have done, but we did it in 200 years, where natural sources took maybe 5000 years to put out that much carbon. The exact number don’t matter, it’s the huge change that we are concerned with. Physics says this will cause changes, land use (deforestation and agriculture), damning up all the worlds large rivers, along with ozone changes, and the other greenhouse gases, methane, NO2, CfCs, and cement making, we have changed the nature of the atmosphere.
Now some might deny that, but they are delusional. Some also question the theory, which is valid, as it is a hypothesis in the sense of the predicted changes. But the amounts of CO2, and the land use changes, there is a very high probability this is going to cause grief somehow. But, it’s not known how, and how fast.
It’s obvious that some people think saying “it’s fucking cold, and I blame global warming” is some sort of a troll. The problem with this, is that exact sentiment, even as a scientific theory, is actually presented in both science journals, and of course the media. If I say it, it sounds crazy, until you realize it’s being claimed by a lot of people, and yes, the record fucking cold is being blamed on GLOBAL WARMING.

The actual scientist are being cautious about jumping ship, and riding the bandwagon of “global warming making winters colder”, but that never stopped the media, or idiot bloggers from trumpeting it as gospel.
I mostly ignored the troll thread where he tried to demand I discuss what he thinks of as “Climategate”, because you should never feed a troll, it makes them stick around.
The emails are a goldmine of data, information, and a look into things we usually never ever get to see. How actual scientists communicate, the issues they wrestle with, and how mad they were over bloggers and people asking them for the data, so they could check for themselves. (granted after they refused to answer honestly, the demands reached a level that could be called harassment)
But what I found so amazing, was the information, things you would never see in the finished papers. And the obvious bias exhibited, which everybody fucking knows is there, which is why peer review and replication is vital. Climategate wasn’t, IMNSHO, about dirty tricks, as much as it was about how science actually is done. And of course that priceless Trenberth email, where in a very human moment, he complained about the cold, and wondered where the global arming was.
(it was Oct 2009, and it was really fucking cold where he was. No, seriously it was.)
