Let’s see the math here … the ice on Antarctica and Greenland is negligible compared to the total volume of the oceans … go ahead … do the arithmetic … see … very very little sea level rise. Most of the rise is due to simply the expansion of the water as it warms.
The problem is the data set is too small, we’ve only been monitoring the extent of the sea ice since 1979, only 36 years, very hard to say what long range tread is. Sea levels rise about 3 mm (1/8 inch) per year, that’s only a foot per century, save me from your doom and destruction scenarios.
Please … Professor Plait is the head of the horror parade …
Oh, see, when you linked to that BS article about polar ice not decreasing, I figured you were trying to argue that, you know, polar ice wasn’t decreasing. But no, your argument was actually that the ocean is warming and the polar ice is decreasing, but it doesn’t really matter. I’d say you’re moving the goalposts, but you don’t even have any goalposts.
I can see why deniers would feel that way. It’s annoying to have a scientist call you out on the BS.
Is English your second language, or is the strawman argument the only thing you’re left with?
Climate is measured in thirty year time intervals, so average all the data we’ve collected and we get one datum, with nothing to compared to. Argo, nothing is demonstrated in climate terms, we’ll have to wait 24 more years.
A little defensive about Professor Plait, are we? He throws dog shit out there and people gobble it up without thinking.
What climate will change profoundly?
What extreme weather?
Tropical storms should be lessening in strength.
Wildfires … not even close.
Sea level rises three feet in a hundred years, at worst.
This brilliant piece from thinkprogress may help explain what is going on. What we are seeing is “pre-traumatic stress disorder”, where those who can see the future are suffering extreme stress over something that hasn’t happened yet.
So it’s not really the fuckheads fault, they are suffering a medical condition, because they alone can see the future, and it’s terrible.
You see? It’s not really your fault if you are stressed and angry, you just are special enough to be able to see the bleak future ahead. It’s no surprise you are angry, depressed and maybe even a little nuts. Who wouldn’t be? The worst part is what is happening to the poor deniers.
See? Deniers are too stressed to even hear the truth, so it’s not their fault either. They are just too stressed about the horrible future, so they deny it.
Is it any wonder everybody is sick of this global warming? You are either suffering “pre-traumatic stress disorder”, or you are really really stressed and in complete denial over the bleak future.
Those of us who are skeptics should be more compassionate, the idiots going on about the horror, the horror, they are sick. And so are the people saying there is nothing to worry about. Everybody is all stressed out.
So when you see a grief filled sad and worried person going on about how bad things will be, remember they are suffering a disorder.
Pre-traumatic stress disorder
Global warming has made them sick. And you thought this topic was just a joke. I told you global warming was making people sick.
Even the people who deny global warming are sick. They are so stressed out they are in complete denial. I don’t know what’s worse, pre-traumatic stress disorder or being so out of it you just act as if the world isn’t ending, but in any case we have to do something about this shit.
Ah the good old days, when basic global warming theory and observational science agreed. that an increasing greenhouse effect would cause winters in the NH to warm the fastest.
A decade later (that would be 2010) the story changed, a lot.
By George Monbiot. Published in the Guardian 21st December 2010
Rather than back off, even a little, the alarmists switches stories like it’s noting, and suddenly, AFTER it happens, they tell us that colder winters, and record snow, it’s because of global warming changing the weather patterns.
And since it’s only a small part of the world (which the data now shows is bullshit), since it’s only a “few small areas”, it doesn’t even matter, because GLOBALLY it’s so much warmer than ever, and really, after all, who ever said winters would warm up? It was the media, (you know how they lie about everything), no real climate scientist ever said anything about winters warming.
Here’s a much starker picture, which goes up till last February. Anyone who lived through the last several winters already understands why people might be a little miffed, what with all the talk about warmer winters and the loss of ski resorts and maple syrup, why cities should sell their snow plows, and of course, why the US hasn’t built any icebreakers, or has any being built.
Because you see, the NH winters have to warm, it’s a key part of the basic global warming theory. You can’t have more ice and snow, and record cold winters, especially not more of them in a row, in a greenhouse warming theory.

THE GREAT PROMISE OF THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT – NYTimes.com
Currently, global warming threatens the maple syrup industry. On June 4, 2007, Timothy D. Perkins Ph.D., director of the Proctor Maple Research Center at the University of Vermont, testified before Congress that warming trends have begun to shorten the syrup collecting season. Perkins says the long-term effects of global warming may lead to a shift in forest composition and the maple-beech-birch range will begin migrating northward to cooler areas
It seems they rediscovered the warming hole. This has been brought up here several times. It’s like a doughnut hole, the hole is where there is no warming. It’s one reason why so many Americans are skeptical of the global warming nutjobs. When the data shows it’s getting colder, it’s hard to accept the global doom we are told is fast approaching. Russians have the same problem, since snowfall is increasing, and coming earlier than ever recorded. Which is interesting, as we continue on with this new study.
It’s quite interesting, since Plass theorized rainfall would decrease with CO2 forced warming.
Those regions already are showing a signal, but it’s not what the models predict at all. It’s a pattern of winter cooling, with more snow.
What does it mean? And is there any predictive power from just the data? What is the cause? Those are scientific questions.
If somebody tells you “it’s global warming”, they are highly likely to be full of crap, since that is certainly not what the models predict, nor what the theory explains.
If the IPCC and the consensus had been “projecting” an increase in snow, and early snow, and record cold for large regions of the NH, then it would make sense. Of course now, after it’s not possible to deny it’s happening any longer, some want to change history and say it is predicted. It was predicted. But they are liars.
You know what I’m sick of? YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT I’MA SICK OF?
Aw, fuck it.
My hot dog buns come in packages of 8 (tee hee). Where’s a guy gotta go to find a naked wiener to eat? (No chili, please! The naked dog is already skating on thin ice. No call to add something that looks like diarrhea. (Huh! I said “thin ice” in FX’s Global Warming thread. Wonder if that will make it onto a wall?))
ETA: And what the hell did New Hampshire ever do to you FX?
You know what I’m sick of? I’m sick of pecan pies with too much sugar. Like where it’s just this sugar bomb in your mouth and you can feel your heart start racing and it’s practically sticking your lips together like paste. In fact, I’m kind of sick of pecan pies entirely, too much sugar or not.
And whatever happened to banana cream pies? No one makes them anymore. I guess they’re kind of disgusting, but still.
