I'm so glad there is so little pretentious cultural pessimism on SDMB

So…That would mean the most popular form of mass entertainment that my parents grew up with, would be worrying about the world going to hell in a handbasket, reading magazines about it and discuss it over bottles of red wine with likeminded hippies?

Actually, that makes a lot of sense.

What struck me most about the two articles I wrote about in my OP, was how outdated the tone of them was. Boy, these things change fast.

I recently read another essay, that made a convincing contrast between the generations’ way of coping with life. The writer, who was of my age, 40, argued that he grew up in a psychology & therapy oriented culture. Discover yourself, develop yourself, and all that.
The writers dad, on the other hand, grew up in a time where such introspection was thought of as a vain, self absorbed waste of time. He coped with life by partaking in an endless stream of volunteer work and committees.
The author concluded that both ways have merit, and that it is just what you grew up with.

Yeah, but the board isn’t really what it used to be back in the early days. Especially lately, it just isn’t the same.

If I was good looking, or talented, or a rich world-traveling playboy type, I might go by “Bobbio”. That sounds so Mediterranean, and I’m a pale Mic, so it would amuse me.

Behold, Bobbio!

That was Cicero. It’s less well-known that he eventually moved to Chicago and settled on Lake Michigan…

Yeah, back then no one indulged in tedious games of “remember when.”
