Hope this isn’t too much of a faux pas (or economic blunder, for that matter), but does anyone know of any other message boards that are as interesting as the SDMB, but that aren’t so…, um, pretentious?
i dont know of any but i agree with your assessment of this one. people on this board take themselves wayyyy to seriously. they try so hard to be creative and entertaining. it’s all so very sad.

There are several different boards within the SDMB empire. If you haven’t noticed already this is the “General Questions” section and people in this forum do tend to be more “serious” in answering questions than in the others because there is the (not always correct) assumption that people are asking questions in good faith and looking for a seriously considered answer.
I have taking my occasional (mostly deserved) beatings for going off topic, but I never had the hubris to think that those who were taking me to task were being “pretentious”. Other unflattering descriptive phrases may come to mind, but “pretentious” as a general characterization of the board?
Please reference an SDMB exchange or two that you consider pretentious so we can understand your point of view and won’t think you’re just a clueless poser in over your head. Oops… did I really say that? How pretentious of me.
Ahem. Terribly sorry, old chap, but I really must insist that the present topic is really more appropriate to another forum. Shall we move it to IMHO? I think we shall.

Hah. Very funny… no, really, it was. But, I agree that IMHO is a better forum.
And, astro, actually, I don’t know if you’re post is a joke. But, really, I could probably take any thread of significant length and find many pretentious posts in it. Of course there’s those posters of more humble behavior and attitude, but they typically disappear after a while.
I was just curious if they disappeared to a better place or if they just gave up.
Jeez, zero, you’re really against this place. Try starting your own thread…Something that can handle levity. If it survives beyond a few posts, you’ll see that not everyone is pretentious.

Nah, this place is pretty cool for the most part. There are tons of interesting topics that come up, and I’ve gained a lot in both trivial and relevant knowledge since I first stumbled here. That’s always a plus. I just don’t know if I like some of the implict rules. Like, you must have 1 million posts under your belt before people will answer your questions. Or, you must keep strictly OT, or else you will be marked. Or, unless you’re one of the people with 1 million posts, you must keep your questions politically correct. And, heaven forbid you resurrect a flogged horse (even if everyone hasn’t gotten all their whipping action in). Of course, I’m exaggerating just a little.
And, yes, I know about ethos, pathos, and eros.
Ultimately I was just wondering if there are greener pastures; that’s all. But if there aren’t, and even if there are, I’ll stay here and adapt.
Zero, you’ve obviously been reading the wrong threads. I’ve been OT more posts than not. It’s a bit less tolerated in GQ than in other forums, but unless you’re being an ass, you probably won’t get called on it.
And you know what gets you marked? Whining about how you’re marked. That just makes people see you as a silly little child.
Now go read MPSIMS and try telling me with a straight face that people there are serious and don’t go OT.

To actually answer the OP, if you are interested in music go to imusic and post to your favorite band’s message board. There’s also a discussion board at freakylinks, if you are interested in the freaky and weird. (ghosts, witches, psychic abilities, etc.)
