FXMastermind’s level of discussion is to claim that scientists are correct when telling us about the slight risk for pregnant women and very small children. (That is the reason why his statement that supporters “claim that mercury fillings are harmless” was a straw man) But then he is telling us that scientists are wrong when reporting about how the risks are even less so for others.
He is picking and choosing science, that is not SCIENCE.

Talk about poisoning the well. Why would he engage with someone who has already showed contempt for his integrity by assuming he’ll weasel before even given a chance. If you’re trying to bait him, it’s pretty sleazy behavior.
He already has avoided, many times, discussing the dangers of mercury, as well as not answering the discussion about how we actually can prove mercury vapor comes off of the old fashioned fillings.
It’s not poisoning the well when the avoidance has already been happening, multiple times.
Either that, or he has to work for a living and doesn’t spend 24/7 on the SDMB. I mean, what the fuck, less than an hour since you demand an explanation and based on that you say he’s “not coming”? Let’s just ignore that medical types often work Saturdays, too.
Anyone who actually wants to know can easily find vast amounts of evidence on the issue of mercury and dentistry. The real problem is that so many woo woo people have latched onto this is just one more sign of how evil “big medicine” is. When it’s usually just ignorance.
It’s also not a hijack because it’s going back to the original topic of the thread, which is my horror of a mouth. That was my attempt at humorously pointing out that your mercury rants are, in fact, the hijack.
FXMastermind Yes I am a licensed dentest in the state of Texas. I’m not sure how you want me to prove it. Been licensed for 24 years and 4 years school prior to that hence my doing dentistry for 28 years statement.
Is Mercury a poison, sure. But poision is dose dependent. Chlorine is a bigger poision but for the little bit of it in the drinking water the benefits outweigh the risks. Mercury in fillings is the same way. Do amalgam fillings give off mercury yeah a bit, on the order of a couple of parts per billion. Each individual and his or her dentist must weigh the good against the bad. I still place amalgam restorations and still have them in my mouth. If you don’t want them that is fine. You do know of course the the bonded filling you are championing give off volatile organic compounds.
As for mercury regulations again I don’t know what you want. Our amalgam comes pre encapsulated so no exposure to liquid mercury. The metalic amalgam is stable unless heated. We send all leftover to a licensed scrap dealer. Anything taken out by suction goes down the sewer. I did have about 7 pounds of liquid mercury that an old dentist gave me(from before encapsulation) and I took it to the city hazardous waste disposal site.
Sorry I "avoided" answering for so long but I am at most on the boards a few minutes a day and I was doing Saturday chores
Not meant as a hijack but what do you do with the mercury in a broken fluorescent light bulb?
I can wait until he starts asking all the doctors for a copy of their MD’s, the pilots in the aviation threads for proof of their licensing, and the crazies for copies of their certification papers.
Could be worse- muuuuch worse.
I know someone- me- who broke a molar biting into a bone in a KFC boneless bbq sandwich.
Over the years that molar splintered…broke the molar below it…and both splintered every few months- with horrid pain as a result.
I was sick- it was making me sick. People told me- ‘You don’t look too good…’
I ran a temperature for years due to those two teeth.
Finally had them both taken out a few years ago, after overcoming my primordial fear of dentists.
Literally took 3 minutes to remove both- by now nubs- with zero pain, and wonderful relief.
So it could be worse- these things can actually kill you…
