I read in the AJC yesterday that the “Left Behind” series of books is being turned into an upcoming TV series. It will only be broadcast in Canada, but will be available in the US in VHS or DVD form.
My sincerest apologies to our northern brothers and sisters.
What would it be about? Who would star in it? (Sorry, I am only just barely aware of these books, and really don’t know what they are about, other than they are Christian-themed.)
The Left Behind series is an account of the last days written by a couple fundamentalists. From what I’ve heard, it’s not worth the paper it’s printed on.
Why on Earth would they only broadcast it up here? Who exactly is the target audience? The most religious people we have are either not Christian or so Christian that television is evil. Or is that the problem? Is TV cheaper than sending missionaries up here? So many questions…
Prolly ‘cause those heathen Canadians are talking about legalizing the demon weed, marijuana, and have pretty liberal standards about lots o’ things Bible-thumpers are flatout against.
Catfight, I wouldn’t minimize the fundamentalist element in Canadian society – they may not be as vocal or visible as their U.S. counterparts, but there are signicant numbers. Heck, B.C. has it’s own mini bible-belts.
It’s odd to me that the LB books have sold 900 billion copies, but the movies are straight-to-video and can’t get more star power than Kirk Cameron. (Even Omega Code got Michael York).
I wonder if he’ll do the series, or if he’s still convinced TV producers are “pornographers” (his accusation against the producers of GROWING PAINS when they asked him to film a scene in which his character had a key to his girlfriend’s apartment; apparently he’d never seen Boogie Nights).
So I wonder if the producers of the show have Rapture Insurance in case one of their stars is taken into heaven while filming?
I’ve actually made the sacrifice of reading the first seven books (don’t want to get the eighth until it’s out in paperback, I hate paying hardcover price, may even wait a while and pick it up used…
The books are crappy. Movies and TV shows based on are almost never as good as the books they are based on.
So, a TV show based on a series of crappy books…
Nope, don’t think I’ll be moving to Canada anythime soon.
I saw one of these movies on a local religious channel at about 5am on a Saturday after a long, hard Friday night. It was one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever seen, and it wasn’t just because of all the drugs I took. Bring that series on!!! I’d watch it, um, religiously.
Isn’t there some kind of Canadian connection with Cloud Ten Pictures (producers of LB)? I seem to remember reading somewhere that the producers and/or director is Canadian. If that’s the case, it that might explain the Canadian series. I might just watch it for the camp value.
I remember seeing “The Omega Code”. (I like Michael Ironside and Michael York.) It wasn’t bad, but then again, I was judging it by “Christian movie” standards, which is not the same as judging it by “regular movie” standards. But still, I thought it was OK. It also had many other recognizable faces in it. MANY. (Actor Casper Van Dien, for one, who has gone on to do some mainstream movies.)
Actually, the thing that prompted me to see the film in the first place was a rather positive article in the Calendar section of the L.A. Times. It said that there was an effort to make more “mainstream” Christian movies, which would have good production values and more mainstream stars. Good for them, I thought.
However, “Left Behind” doesn’t sound appealing to me in the least. I haven’t read the books (and have no intention of doing so) but I’ll take Thea’s word for it, that they suck.
