We’re getting a new bed today. While my wife is out getting some shopping done, I thought I’d take the old bed and move it up to the guest room (now we can finally get rid of the crappy futon in there).
So, I take the old box spring and try and get it upstairs. Unfortunately, not the easiest thing in the world. I have to get it through a doorway to the staircase, where there is an odd angle in the doorway involved, plus a low ceiling at one point. It all adds up to a tricky situation.
I try pushing it though, and it goes ok for a bit, but then it gets wedged. Ok, I sqeeeeze past and try pulling. Ok, better – almost there, just about got it, aaaand…stuck. Wedged. Now I can’t pull it further up the stairs, nor can I push it back down and through the doorway. On top of that, I can’t climb back down past it to try and give the final shove that I’m sure would send it clear and up the stairs.
There is a huge honkin’ box spring jammed in my staircase. I can’t move it, and I can’t get past it. Damn good thing my office is on the third floor as well. At least I have the Dope to pass the time until my wife gets home.
Didja ever read Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency? (I think it was that one.) I read it years ago and didn’t like it much, but there was a bit in there I’ll never forget, about a sofa wedged in a stairwell. It had been there for several years, and the protagonist made a computer program to work out how to move it to get it out. The computer was still working on it, but it insisted that due to the laws of physics, it was impossible for the sofa to have gotten in there in the first place!
Sounds like your boxspring. Perhaps we can help, but first we need to know the important stuff. Is it a Serta?
I read Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (and Long Dark Tea Time Of The Soul) many, many years ago. Neither one really stuck with me (does one of them open with a robotic monk or something?) but I do have a vague recollection of the scene you’re talking about.
Fortunately, my wife came home not too long after I posted. The old bed is in the spare room (with only minimal stairway ceiling damage), and the brand-new sweet pillowtop set is in our bedroom (thanks, Craigslist guy who had no idea how much this set was actually worth!). Now, I need a nap.
