Congrats! Can I use you to sue someone?
Welcome to our noble profession. And I mean noble in the gassiest sense… we are all full of hot air.
Seriously though, good job!
In most states passing the Bar Exam does not make you an attorney. You have apply for your license (having a license is called being “admitted” to a particular jurisdiction). In my state (NY) that takes another ~2-10 months. There’s a bunch of paperwork and fees, there’s a required financial ethics program that’s only given a couple times a month, they have to schedule a swearing in which is usually only once a month…
I passed the Bar in November submitted my application for admission in February, and was sworn in in August. And that was luckily because normally they don’t swear-in in August and I expected to wait till September.
Signing my name to the Big Book Of All NYS Lawyers Ever was pretty cool.
Nice.
I never doubted it.
Thanks, guys. I had the Florida Supreme Court’s Twitter page (seriously, it’s a thing) and their bar results webpages open and I was furiously refreshing all morning. Turns out my wife was the first one to see that the results posted because it happened while I paused to do some actual work. She beat every one of my classmates to it.
So far it looks like my entire class (that is, my graduating class from my school’s part time program) passed. The overall passage rate is a little over 70% so this will be huge if it holds up.
In Florida, you have to pass the bar exam (check), a character and fitness examination (read, background check), and be sworn in by a judge or administrative hearing officer. You can do the swearing in thing whenever you want, or more accurately whenever you can get a judge to do it.
I don’t have the second part of C&F clearance yet because the Board of Bar Examiners lost one of my forms and I missed the letter where they asked me to resubmit it. I’d hoped they would complete it by now but it didn’t happen.
My law school does a mass swearing in ceremony which is presided over by the chief judge of the circuit court for the county. It would have been Belvin Perry (the Casey Anthony judge) but he retired last month. I’ll stand for the ceremony tonight and take the oath but it will be “unofficial” since the judge can’t sign my oath form until I get clearance.
One of my many hats is to bailiff for our court when the Chief Justice does the mass swearing in of new Oregon attorneys. It’s very moving to see all the “baby” lawyers fulfilling their dreams.
Congratulations!
Congrats!!!
Well done!
Congratulations!! Good for you - we knew you would come through.
Welcome to the profession!
Felicitations to Apparently At Least Somewhat Bright!
It was a rush for me too.
Our Big Book (called the Roll) dates back over a century, to the territorial period (North-West Territories). You’re eligible to sign the Roll as soon as you get your marks saying you passed. I rushed over and the Exec. Director of the Law Society congratulated me and swore me in on the spot. (There’s a formal ceremony later, in the Queen’s Bench, for all the new calls, where the oath is repeated in front of the Court, but swearing right away lets you start working as a lawyer immediately.)
Then he walked me through the Roll: “Here’s the signature for Haultain, the first Premier of the Territories; here’s Prime Minister Diefenbaker’s signature; there’s Justice Hall of the Supreme Court of Canada, one of the fathers of the Canadian system of Medicare … are you ready to sign, now?”
And you realise that you’re about to become the most junior member of a very august group of people, who have contributed to their country, their province, and to many, many individuals who needed help.
Then he handed me the old steel-nibbed “dipper” pen, that the Law Society has had since before fountain pens were invented. He let me try a few practice signatures on a scrap paper, then I Signed the Roll! Years of effort done, and a new career beginning.
It’s a real rush, Really Not All That Bright. Savour it. Go out for a great dinner with Mrs Bright. Welcome!
Actually, I’m going out with my classmates after work to get greatly drunk. We’ll do dinner tomorrow after the swearing-in.
Congrats!
Well done!
