This is far from pointless, but…

So i’m sitting in IRC, bored out of my mind, in the teens channel. Sitting back, watching the conversation…

and I see this:

And I think: WTF??!

So I message him just to see what he’s up to, and we start talking… he says he’s 19. I tell him I’m 13, that I live in north jersey, blah blah blah. He asks me my name (first and last), I make something up…

at this point he disconnects.
obviously this guy is up to no good and needs to be reported to someone or other to be safe (even if it’s just some guy screwing around or something, this is scary and I need to make myself feel better). I got his cell phone number, his IP #, and saved the conversation. so what the hell do I do now?

Hm… out of curiousity, I looked up the area code to the number he gave me. it’s 246… barbados. Hmmmm.

Call the police and report this immediately. They have people who try to track these things. Sooner or later he is going to find some kid who might not be so lucky as to realize what this guy is trying to do.

You have his IP and his cell phone number. Good girl. Now do me a favour and bookmark this address. From the links on this page you can access just about any organisation worldwide which is involved in trying to keep child sexual exploitation off the net.

There is a specific FBI url devoted exclusively to the kind of stuff you just kept a record of, but someone in the US can probably pull it up far faster than I can right now. If no-one’s posted it by the time I log on tomorrow morning, I’ll make it my business to post it here.

Chances are that he’s offshore and that the cell phone is cloned if he really is the predator he comes across as being and not just someone using IRC for masturbation fodder.

As someone who spends a lot of time on IRC, I can tell you one thing which you can right do right now - send a copy of the transcript you’ve just published here to the IRCops on your net - if nothing else, this f***drop will get k-lined.

Heh, I used to do a lot of that on AOL Instant Messenger. I set my profile to say I was a 12 year old girl and I get lots of guys chatting me up. I’ve never turned any in (I don’t believe the authorities will do anything), but I’ve had a lot of fun messing with their minds.

A couple of extra thoughts.

You don’t happen to have his hostmask logged do you?

And even if you don’t, can you log back onto IRC and type in the following : /dns <his IP as you have it logged>.

You will get a message telling you where that IP resolves to . He could be spoofing his IP, but even if he is, it’s additional information you can provide to the IRCops and law enforcement agencies.

The one, very pertinent, warning I would give you is that if you aren’t genuinely what you claimed to be to that person (ie a 13 year old), then taking any action whatsoever against this person is going to be difficult even if he lives in the US. The issue of entrapment has been discussed before, and no doubt will be discussed again. No-one wants these parasites getting off on technicalities, and all the logs in the world are worth nothing if they have any legal grounds whatsoever to argue entrapment.

Yeah, I never told reported my peds because I don’t think it’s a crime to solicit sex from a 28 year old man pretending to be a 12 year old girl. One guy gave me the password to his hotmail account, though (so I could see a picture of him he had stored in it), and I emailed our chat transcripts to about everybody in his address book. That was fun. 8^)

Maybe all of us should vow to spend an hour or so a day, in chat, pretending to be young girls! That would confuse these sick f***s!! And maybe keep them from getting in touch with REAL 12-year-old girls!

I tried to do the thingie with his ip and it said “unable to resolve”. maybe I copied it down wrong. shit

I have no idea what and IRCop even is, let alone how to contact one :slight_smile: I’ll email you when I get home from school…

I think I’m going to print it out and take it to my guidance counselor (i’m in highschool) and see what the hell he says.

Have you tried reporting the freak to CyberAngels? Reader’s Digest ran an article on them a couple of years ago, they are an anti-child porn and anti-pedophile organization. Some of their members have participated in pedophile stings by posing as children in chat rooms and agreeing to meet with the target, when the target shows up the police are waiting. I recall some news program (Dateline? 48 Hours?) showing tapes of stings in action.
