I'm tired of Netflix

I most of the time don’t want to watch what they are streaming. Haven’t gotten an actual DVD for years. What are some other choices for streaming movies, good dopers?

Pluto TV is a free app and a website with lots of channels. It is not on-demand, but you watch what they are showing when they are showing it (many, many channels to choose from, though). I use a Chromecast to watch it on my big screen TV.

What is it you are looking for that Netflix is lacking? Because with movies there’s going to be a lot of overlap between Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and cable VOD.

I use Amazon to stream movies, most of the time. I don’t think their Included-with-Prime (or rather, “free”) selection is that great. It’s the same as or worse than Netflix.

But they have almost every movie AVAILABLE to stream. For pay. So every so often I rent a movie to stream on Amazon. Usually I throw movies into my Watchlist when I read a good review, then months or years later get around to watching them when they’ve come down in price.

Oh I also take advantage of Amazon’s $1 off Digital Content coupons for accepting slower shipping.

I like Hulu, but I dislike the ads, so I recently upgraded to an ad-free plan for $4 more per month. I’m happy they offer Showtime for an extra subscription fee too, because I don’t have to pirate Twin Peaks now. But now it’s $20 a month. I did cancel Netflix a while back, but I predict I will buy it again for Stranger Things and the next season of Arrested Development.

HBO Now is a thing. It’s HBO for people like me without a cable subscription. It’s got a lot of good shows and movies. Can’t tell you the price though, as we’re currently using a friend’s account.

I have Amazon Prime Video too, and it’s free with my Amazon Prime account, but I can’t say I’ve watched it recently. I remember they were the only streaming service that had the early Spongebob seasons though, so they have that going for them.

Go outside. Take a stroll, ride a bike, fly a kite, smell the flowers, learn Tai Chi in the park. You have reached the end of the internet; now go do something useful.

Otherwise, look at something like a KODI, or Amazon Prime. Hulu might be a good option if you live in the US.

You can always stream from Amazon, Google Play or Vudu on a per movie basis. May cost you more or less than Netflix depending on how many movies you watch on a weekly basis. Better selection though if you want to see recent stuff.

I unsubscribe until they have something “must-see” for me, then watch other stuff they’ve added, then cancel. For example, I rejoined this month to catch Marvel’s The Defenders, I’ll probably binge that and cancel until Will Smith’s Bright comes out in December.
