I'm totally in Love With Obama - Presidential Edition

Noooooooooo, I didn’t. Several others already said the same thing before I ever read this thread.

You’re absolutely right. Shodan and kittenblue got there before you. My apologies.

I don’t think it’s fair to accuse me of threadshitting. I just said I’m uncomfortable with all the “ooh, he makes me tingly” “OOh, he’s soooo good-looking!” type of reactions that make his more ardent supporters sound like middle-schoolers. I saw the same things happen with Clinton, and I wasn’t happy about it then.

I never said that I didn’t like and admire the new President, and his family. It’s just the Brangelina-type reactions that make me unhappy. It is refreshing to see a new way of doing business in Washington. But I don’t want to know what moisturizer Michelle uses. The presidency is a huge, huge strain on a family, and I worry about how all this attention will affect what are two very young, impressionable girls.

I can understand that people get giddy about all this. I can be not-so-giddy without being accused of being nasty and cynical, as in this quote from above… “but this Obama Worship/Messiah/Cult of Personality crap is just a right-wing talking point, meant to deflate Obama and make fun of his supporters. It’s nasty and cynical, far more nasty than some excited wonks.” That just reminds me of the girls who, when you tried to warn them about not being head-over-heels about somebody, shot back with the “you’re just jealous because you don’t have a boyfriend!” argument…shortly before the guy steals all their money and is caught bonking the IHOP waitress in the back seat of your car. All I’m trying to say is that it makes me uncomfortable to hear women squealing over Obama.

Maybe I’m not so giddy and excited because, unlike some people who are so blown away by what has happened, I have always felt that this was inevitable, that someday, when the right candidate came along at the right time, we would elect a black person or a woman to the presidency. It doesn’t seem to be as momentous to me as it is to others, because I never figured that it WOULDN’T happen.

I’m not giddy because he’s black, Kitten, I’m giddy because he’s FAAAAAAABulous!

And the bandit jsut appears to be one of those people who prefers to believe that everything falls within a fairly narrow band, and most things and people do. But Bush really was extraordinarily horrible and unless he turns out to be putting on an amazing act, this man is pretty amazingly terrific by the standards of politicians and presidents that have come before, that’s pretty hard to refute.

Then why not take your threadshitting, and that’s what it is, to the Pit? Do you go into all “I Love…” threads and threadshit? If the thread were something like, What do you think of President Obama? then it would be fair to state your opinions that you’re uncomfortable with the inevitable gushing that would occur. But this thread specifically is, huh, was, about people who still feel giddy with excitement.

While I think he is good-looking and has the nicest smile, I’m not sexually attracted to President Obama, and my glee and excitement stem from all the things I listed above (intelligent, articulate, etc.). I like hearing what he’s doing (such as today, when he gave mayors a smackdown warning not to stuff their pockets), what he’s up to, who he talks to, who he appoints, where he goes and what he does there, not what brand of deodorant he uses. I took glee in the fact that he was so warmly welcomed in Canada, after Bush attracted 8000 protesters the last time he visited.

I don’t care about Michelle’s moisturizer, and that you would even say such a thing underlines my point. It’s demeaning, both to Michelle and to her admirers. I care that she hosted a large group of children in the White House, including the staff’s children, something that’s never been done before (musical guests, Sweet Honey in the Rock, now that’s cool). I care that she’s visited and given talks to the Department of Education, the Interior Department, Housing and Urban Development, and the Department of Agriculture. It’s unprecedented and fascinating to me. Do I notice what she’s wearing? Somewhat, just because I like her use of colors, which is unusual. So what? How does that affect my admiration for her intellect and compassion?

And the kids are cute as a button, as well as being polite and engaged. How can we not look at them and say, wow, great kids. Unless Michelle and the kids are supposed to stay hidden behind closed doors, never seen, never heard (which would suit the right wing just fine) then how can we NOT have an opinion on them? But apparently to some, the opinion is only valid if it’s negative or neutral. Fuck that. I’m proud of my President. I’m proud of my First Lady. I’m proud of the First Kids. The individual parts are all good. The whole package is amazingly wonderful, and just so refreshing.

Word.

key-ring-gate! Prez impeached for corruption, after denouncing corruption on campaign trail! Accepted bribe from Canuck biz-man in exchange for undisclosed favors! Secret Service bribed to look other way during exchange with foreign national! Hypocrite Obama looking into Gitmo Warcrimes for Bush, but OKs key-ring (and alleged snowglobe!!) payoff for self!!!

In that case, Equipoise, you are a stellar human being, a pillar of your community, highly intelligent, and an excellent lay.*

All in fun, my sweet

Well, I couldn’t argue with you, much. I’ve never been on the same planet as stellar. I’m an insular person who isn’t involved at all in the community. I’m of average intelligence (117 IQ which is nothing special) and was a high school dropout due to a teenage pregnancy (I later finished, but never went to college). You’d have to ask my husband about the lay part, but he’d never answer you because he’s not a blabbermouth. I think I’m alright in that department though.

pseudotriton ruber ruber, ha!
