OK I swear I’ve been all over and maybe my google-fu is weak, but does anyone know when you will be able to order or buy the new 27" iMac? My bf wants it for his business and earlier this month they said in a few weeks but no one seems to have a date. Is there usually a release date for things like this? Is it actually possible that it won’t be for months and months? If so he needs to have a plan B, IMHO. He has his heart set on this particular machine, so advice on what else to get while I know is well meaning isn’t very useful at this point.
Thoughts? Advice? Every time we check they say there’s not an official date but it will be “soon”. ARGH!
Is there some particular reason why he wants a Mac? Granted Apple makes good machines, but the world of small business is dominated by Windows in ways that few can imagine. Unless he needs one of a handful of Mac only software packages like Final Cut Pro, everything he wants is available in Windows. In addition I as a computer tech tend to recommend against “All in one” models for several reasons.
1: limited upgradability
2: a Good monitor can last through several computers
3: Because it makes Opal cry
4: PITA to repair
5: if he requires assistance most decent mac technicians charge about 30% more than their windows counterparts.
6: AIO models tend to be targeted for appearance and styling, not performance.
I’m not sure of all of his reasoning but he’s a Mac guy and does photography as part of his business- he for sure wants this particular model but it’s maddening that no one seems to know when he can finally actually BUY one. So weird! I have an iPad and iPhone but am never really waiting on pins and needles for anything to come out, so I don’t know if this is typical for Apple or not.
It is pretty much standard procedure for Apple. They are very tight-lipped about products until they do their big unveiling a few months before they ship. Then there’s always enough pre-orders that the first month or two of product deliveries are on an as-available basis. I think part of it marketing and psychology and part of it is keeping a very short inventory turnover.
