Imaginary friends - problem or not?

And some of us, I imagine, have more than one.

As Erin Brockovich once said: “Well, as long as I have one ass instead of two I’ll wear what I like.” On average, I think Dopers have about one butt apiece.

That’s how my girlfriend refers to the Dope. Me playing with my imaginary friends.

Yeah, good point, and the parents have tried this too. Problem seems to be in explaining that he might be acceptable in one place but not in another - I’m sure there’s no desire to have her upset at school, but ok in the supermarket, or the restaurant, etc.

I guess part of the concern is that it doesn’t seem to be a stress-relief thing, it’s more that he’s there with her all the time and she’s more inclined to talk to Mr Fingers than other children or adults. I have no idea how ‘normal’ this is - but it seems that socialisation skills are critical in those first few months at school and this seems to set her apart in ways that might harm her. Or not?

Shrug, I didn’t have an imaginary friend but several of my current coworkers did (maybe half). They don’t seem to be any more messed in the head than the rest of our bunch of enginerds…

Well, thank you, Harvey! I prefer you, too!
