Imma Hotsleeper - have you ever used the Bedfan? How about tower fans?

I sleep HOT… no matter what, I generate boatloads of heat and I get super-hot and it is the single greatest disturber of my rest. I always have some kind of fan in my room to keep the air moving over my skin to help cool me down as I heat things up through the night.

My fan croaked, I’m shopping for a replacement, and I’ve always been very interested in the Bedfan. It’s a brilliant idea on the face of it, because in addition to sleeping so damn hot I’m also one of those folks who sleeps better with SOMETHING over me, even if it is merely a sheet, and the bedfan seems to work best under covers.

But here’s my biggest issue, and what I’m hoping someone can answer from experience: I am also a very violent sleeper, which is to say I toss, I turn, I NEVER EVER EVER manage to sleep with covers tucked in anywhere, they are always completely loose on all sides, even if they dont’ start like that. I’m all over the place, and so are my covers, which generally end up sorta wrapped around me and bunched up…(Also why sheet + blanky/comforter doesn’t’ work: I ALWAYS kick the sheet down to the end of the bed. ALWAYS…)

From the description, it seems like the way the bedfan really works best is if one sleeps more peacefully than I do, and if the air can be trapped under the covers. I get the impression that the superiority of the design would be moot with someone like me, who is all over the place, and it would end up being no better, and perhaps even less effective than a more standard (and much less expensive) fan.

So… have you used one yourself, can you respond to my concern?

As for tower fans… Costco has this going right now, which seems to be a very good deal, especially as a twofer, but I have no experience with a tower fan at all, only box fans and oscillating fans. As good? Same? Better? Worse? Advantage is…? Where does the air emerge? Low, high?

Can’t speak for Bedfan, I borrow a tower when I visit my parents who keep their house temp set on simmer due to their age. It works wonderfully, helping keep me cool and forcing me under the covers regardless of the actual room temp.

It should work well for you, and it had the added benefit of being a regular fan, so it’s not so specialized that it can’t be used elsewhere in the house.

Have you considered the ChiliPad? It’s basically a pad that circulates water, and a radiator. It looks promising to me.

Another vote for a tower, although a wider one might be better, depending on how much space you have available. The narrow ones or the ones where the fan body itself sits on a narrow pedestal tend to start vibrating and shaking after a few years of use where the wide ones are more stable. The tower is also a multitasker and can be moved to other areas of the house during the day. From the “Bedfan” reviews it doesn’t sound like it’s the best solution for toss-and-turn sleepers.

Costco may have the available models set up in the store so you can check them out for things like potential wobble and for the fan noise at different settings. The Bionaire set you’re considering seems to have more negative than positive reviews at Amazon, including both noise and durability problems.

Even when you’re buying somewhere else it’s usually a good idea to check Amazon for reviews.

I sleep a lot like you described, Stoid, and I’ve found that a ceiling fan over the bed works best for me. Don’t know if that’s an option for you, though.

It may not be a feasible solution, but back when I used to sleep on a waterbed I found it to be quite cool, even in the summer, when the heater was turned off.

I’m also a hot sleeping cover-kicker, who now just burns a lot of money and helps expedite the destruction of the planet by cranking the AC up at night.

That is what I do when the summer heat kicks in, and it hurts. I willstruggle through the day with showers and cool rags and fans… So I can justify cranking it at night.

You guys have led me to some cost effective possibilities to add if not replace the fan, the budget priced pads. Love to try out the chilipad someday, but thats bucks.

Its also worse now cuz i sleep with my dogs now, and they really boost the heat. Great when its cold…

Just don’t run a fan in your bedroom in Korea, or you could die. :stuck_out_tongue:

I own a bedfan, and I think they work great, for the record. The problem for me is that my bed is adjustable, which means the fan gets moved around and eventually ends up falling over. However, I have traveled with the bedfan to use on normal hotel room beds, and thought it was great. I don’t know if your sleep violence would have the same impact of knocking the fan off or over, but it might be worth the experiment.

At home, I use a tower fan, and while not nearly as directly effective, I feel like it works well enough to keep me from overheating at night.

I’ve been really wanting a bed fan because I’m always too hot too, but they’re so expensive for just being a differently-shaped fan. I can get a swamp cooler for the same price, so that seems like a better option.

Try this:
Set a box fan close to your bed so it faces your bed at about the same height as the mattress.
[li]Take a corner of a sheet and put it through the box fan’s handle, front-to-back.[/li][li]Take a the corner of a second sheet and tie it to the corner that you put through the handle.[/li][li]Put the second sheet over the first so both are atop your bed.[/li][li]Turn the fan on.[/li]Sleep in the tent you just made.
Something that I’ve found useful on hot nights: before going to bed, use a spray bottle to spray a light mist of water on your top sheet. It chills it right down.

I find any kind of airflow across my face is distracting and keeps me awake, but I can have a fan directed at my feet and it helps me stay cool without keeping me awake.

I personally prefer a regular circular fan on a high stand (like this). The advantage is I can adjust the fan and aim it directly at where my body will be in the bed.

Just use a fan (like one cited by Little Nemo) or a smaller one perched on your dresser. Keep it on low during the night, and it will provide enough circulating air to cool you down.

kam…who got through the hot flushes and horrid nights of the climacteric with the help of her trusty $15 fan from Target!

The bedfan looked good until I got to this:

Anyway, on hot nights when the AC isn’t enough I also use a circular fan aimed at my midsection from the nightstand. As a plus, the noise is soothing and helps me sleep.

As the developer of the Bedfan, I would like to offer my services to answer any questions you might have. As a hot sleeper myself, i too would toss and turn trying to find a cool spot in the bed. But once i started using even the prototypes that i was building i stopped tossing around so much. The simple fact is, that your body gives off heat, your sheets and your mattress will absorb that body heat until it can no longer absorb any more. At that point there is nowhere for the heat to go and you result in kicking off the covers or even worse, sweating.

The Bedfan will gently move that heat that is trapped in your bed and keep your bed and your body cool. The fans are quiet and very effective.

I think you will like it, many people have been using it for years and it has helped a lot of people sleep much better.

Wow. Keen eye for mentions of your product! Hats off on the design, it seems to be an excellent answer to the problem for some people, I was very gratified to learn I was not alone in my issue…

Thank you. It was a great adventure developing the Bedfan and it has been very rewarding seeing how many people it has come to help. I am currently working on some upgrades to the Bedfan. I hope to have them readyby this winter.

Perhaps a hot water bottle filled with cold water? They work great as bed warmers… maybe they would work as a bed cooler, too. And they are relatively cheap around $10 bucks.
