Oh, my tea party friends are positively giddy over the thought that Obama is going to be impeached for retrieving Sgt. Bergdahl without Congressional approval. They are thrilled to finally get rid of that Kenyan Marxist Socialist usurper! They are already celebrating the win!
I think they haven’t really thought this through and that if they did, they would not want to impeach. Impeachment is rare and more rarely successful.
Impeachment begins in the House. It needs a simple majority vote and an ‘article of impeachment.’ Republicans have had a majority for a while now and have talked impeachment over Benghazi and a few other, more far-out, ‘crimes,’ but have never considered the act seriously enough to actually begin the process. I think they just use the idea for fund raising.
Obviously, the impeachment process has never begun because there has been no legitimate reason to do so.
So, if they were to actually try it this time, it would probably fail. Most attempts at impeachment have failed. I understand that most often the attempt to impeach leads to backlash against the instigator party and improved opinion of the target party. Clinton is cited as an example of this.
But, what if the process were begun and was able to leave the House? It would die in the Senate.
But if by some miracle, time went by and the composition of the Senate changed and allowed the article to pass and a hearing were held AND Obama found guilty and finally impeached (whew)… well, what then?
President Biden?
Would the backlash lead to President Hillary? President Elizabeth? President Michelle?
How would this process play out and what would be the result?
As long as we’re discussing fantasy scenarios, we might as well ask how the process would bear out if the entire House of Representatives were to be bitten by werewolves and develop lycanthropy as a result.
Bet them $10,000 each that it won’t happen. That Obama will serve his entire term out. When they hem and haw ask them to grow a set and tell them they’re all talk.
The way to deal with pipsqueaks like that - as Robert Heinlein once wrote - is to step on their toes until they apologize.
I’m asking them “Have you thought this through? What will happen next? You might prefer the devil you know to the devil you don’t know.”
They are not good at planning ahead. All I’m hearing from them is that once Obama is gone, all will be right with the world. It’s all just that simple!
Except for the fact that presidents have actually been impeached, and werewolves do not exist. This is nothing but a stupid sound bite and won’t convince anyone of anything. Just because you happen to be on the side I agree with doesn’t make this a valid (or even funny, because it’s lame as fuck) argument.
Obama being successfully impeached and removed from office over the current matter has exactly as much chance of occurring as do werewolf Congressmen. I stand by my flippant remark.
I believe you are right about this. All their “Support The Troops” rhetoric has had a head-on collision with Sgt. Bergdahl. I think the cognitive dissidence is causing some real pain right now.
The only solution is to make it all go away by getting rid of Obama!
Well, if the Pubs win the Senate, it might give the House the cajones to actually move the articles, thinking they have the voter support to do so. At that point, he’s impeached. They would need 2/3 of the Senate to actually remove him, so that’s pretty much not going to happen. But never underestimate the stupidity of the Pubs in the House to actually try to impeach a president they simply disagree with ideologically.
I really don’t think it would do them any favors at the ballot box to be responsible for impeaching two of the last two Democratic presidents, with both trials leading to absolutely nothing. But again, never underestimate the stupidity…
I heard somewhere - most likely the voices in my head - that Obama already has a strategy planned for this. Biden, citing health problems, will resign as VP and Obama will appoint Hillary Clinton to be the new Vice President, making her President after the impeachment.
Yeah, I know, the Senate has to confirm and they won’t, but can you imagine the looks on the TPers faces before that occurs to them.
So, my friend and I were discussing Obama’s impending impeachment this morning and how it would/could/should occur, but I believe he just ended our discussion with this gem:
