In 2001 this English boy did a bad, bad, bad thing

Agreed.

Well, considering that our country music has its roots in Celtic folk music, it’s just boomeranging back to where it originated from. So your affinity for it isn’t really so shocking after all ;). Our Tan and Sober Gentlemen are very popular over there …

Shame! Shame! Shame! DING DONG!

Patsy is country? OMFG, now I’m one of THEM!

You made me laugh out loud twice in one thread. Thank you.

Could have been worse; could have been The Smurfing Sing Song Album. This item is unavailable - Etsy

I was going to point out exactly that. If you listen to both you can hear the affinity.

In a similar way, the OP might also not be aware that modern “Latin” dances which evolved from the Cuban mambo are descended from the English “country dance” of the 19th century. (The French borrowed it as “danza,” took it to Haiti, whence they took it Cuba, where it became “danzon.”)

Carter Family and Jimmy Rogers (the singing brakeman) - gp back to the roots.

I’m not a big country fan, although I’ve been a K D Lang fan for years. (My first ever record, at age 10, was Sibelius’ Finlandia - still my favourite piece of music - and classical music will always have first place in my heart.) Recently, though, I’ve discovered Corb Lund, and now have quite a few of his albums. He’s worth checking out.

There’s nothing wrong with Bosephus. He has some great classic country tunes.

Ya’ll need to understand that Country Music is like cholesterol: there is the good kind, too.

Yes, indeed. There’s a couple of Sons of the Pioneers songs, and rockabilly that qualifies for me, but the rest can go hide in a hole in the wall. Really shameful stuff. Maybe.

Here’s a quick thankyou to everyone who suggested further listening. I have faithfully sampled every one I did not previously know (or was not very familiar with).

Hank I love dearly. Merle I like also – don’t know him so well, though, so I promise I will do some more research. Driveby Truckers are new to me – liked them a lot. I was surprised at how rocky they were.

Brad Paisley – listened to Whisky Lullaby because it was a duet with Alison Kraus – if that isn’t a recommendation then I don’t know what is. I think youtube said a hundred and nineteen million views – I’ll have to recheck that, maybe I was hallucinating. Listened to a couple more - maybe a bit poppy for me, but I’ll listen to more. Neko Case – listened to a mix; Liked it, but not sure I see the connection to Michelle Shocked.

Listened to a mix. KMAG YOYO – hmm – I think the guys must have heard Subterranean Homesick Blues sometime (heh heh) – god, I’m a sucker for rockabilly, always have been. Won me over in a heartbeat. I’m listening as I type – I hear a lot of Dylan hidden in this.

Know them both. Glen Campbell is too pop/smooth for me. JC – I starteda thread featuring him! So great that I’ll almost overlook Boy Named Sue……

Know her well but I should know her better. Anything in particular I should check out, Panache?

Love the Carter Family. Jimmy Rogers I knew little about. Got a little educated watching the 9 part documentary Country Music by Ken Burns. I realise this is like teaching granny to suck eggs, but if you haven’t seen it, I can’t recommend it highly enough. Best part: gave me a proper introduction to George Jones.

I’ll let you into a secret – a friend made listen to KD Lang back in (I guess) the very late ‘90s. That’s where it started. Corb Lund – listened to a mix. Thank you for another good one. Bible On The Dash ft Hayes Carll? – Hang on, I know that name…

I’m a little familiar with him. He’s OK – the miracle is that he achieved anything in the shadow of his father. Well done to him.

I’m with you on rockabilly, but I’ll give the Sons of the Pioneers a pass….

Also a thankyou for the entertaining abuse. Loved it.

Just a big thank you to all y’all! (That’s the plural, right?)

I dunno, to me, your enjoyment of country as well as Michelle Shocked (which I consider more indie-folk/Americana or something like that) suggests Neko Case. It sounds to me like somebody who would like the country genre and the singer-songwriter/Americana approach of Michelle Shocked would like Neko Case. To me, they occupy a similar musical space in my head.

ETA: Oh, and with Brad Paisley, if guitar pyrotechnics at all interests you or you want to watch some country-style shredding, this live video is fun.

The miracle is that Hank Jr. fell 500 ft off a mountain in Montana fracturing his face and skull in several places when he was 26 years old. He had to have several reconstructive surgeries. He spent two years recovering, having to learn to talk and sing all over again. He grew his iconic beard and always wears sunglasses to hide the scars.

Anyone who questions Hank, just doesn’t like music.

This city boy feels a little twang never hurt any music. Hell, go all in w/ some Mike Ness, Kentucky Headhunters, Jason and the Scorchers…

In 2011 I saw Kris Kristofferson play the Albert Hall; in my defense that year my Ford Mondeo was stolen, my au pair left and returned to France and my guinea pig done ran away, but nevertheless I haven’t been able to look at myself in the mirror since.

I’m going to have to listen to some Nickelback now, to atone all over again.

I second Neko Case, and you might like Brandi Carlyle.

I haven’t seen Clint Black mentioned. He’s one of my all time favorites.

Almost forgot John Anderson.
