Who loves Country? I do!

I have rather eclectic tastes. Not just in music and entertainment.

But, when it comes to music, I always find my way back to Country.

Is it because of my upbringing? Well, Dad was into Classical, Opera, and some Folk. Mom was a definite Rocker, being a Stones and Who fan from before I can remember. Together, they loved to throw Latin dance parties.

So, how did I get to be such a hardcore Country fan?

Beats me. And, ftr, I love Classic Rock, Punk, Early Classical, R&B, etc…

But, I am Country. Everyone who knows me sees me in that light. Is the fact that I almost always wear Kikkers*? Is it the little twang I would put into the songs I sang when I sang for that Spanish band? Is it the way I get completely into character when doing an old Travis Tritt, Alan Jackson, or Randy Travis song at the kaoreoke bar?

Beats me.

I was Country when Country wasn’t cool.

So, go ahead. Join me in my love of Country music. Or, make fun of it. Ain’t no thang to me, see?

I am Country.

*pointy toe, riding heel western (cowboy) boots. KIKK/FM was (is?) a Country music radio station in Houston. So, Kikkers = cowboy boots (or the person wearing them)

I’ve recently started to appreciate country music.

I would by no means say I am country.

But I guess you could say I’m a little bit country, and a little bit rock and roll.

Who’s your favorite?

Wow…

Favorite?
I would have to say I have no fave one.

I’ve been listening to and learning to play alot of Tim McGraw lately.

Randy travis has never put out a bad song.

Mel McDaniels’ Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On is quite possibly the funnest song I know, either to listen to or do.
Ignoring all their political crap, I enjoy the Dixie Chicks.
Hank Jr is a god.

I like early Shania. Her new stuff is OK, I guess.
Wow… favorite… way to hard a Q for my little head!

Almost forgot Keith Urban.

Way to go Australia! Send some more like that!

Another big country fan here. Love the (older) good stuff. I’m worried about the future of country. Sure there will always be a country genre, but what’s going to happen to the good music… in the words of Mr. Jones * who’s gonna fill their shoes*?

Favorites?

Hard to narrow down to just one. I’m a big fan of the greats, Willie, Waylon, Johnnie, George (Jones and Strait), can’t help but want to slow dance when I hear Patsy.

Marty Robbins, Lefty, Conway… I think I need a beer.

I used to loathe country music but lately I like more and more of it. I certainly prefer the politics of many of the singers more than rock.

Another country fan checking in.

I love the old stuff the best though. Harper Valley PTA is my favorite song… EVER!

Kenny Rogers, George Jones, Conway Twitty. I love 'em.

My favorite newer artist would be Patty Loveless and not just because she’s from near my hometown.

I rediscovered country a few years ago; I mentioned to a friend that I was getting tired of hearing the same songs ten times a day on the oldies station and he said he had started listening to US99, Chicago’s country station. Listening to modern country reminded me of some of the classic country I used to hear sometimes when I was younger, and I started picking up CDs of the older stuff - Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, George Jones, etc. Listening to Allison Krause got me into bluegrass, which reminded me how much I like fiddle and banjo music.

I’ve now got a massive CD collection which ranges all over the place. And that doesn’t take into account the classical, oldies rock, musicals, et al that I still collect.

Favorites include (in no particular order) George Strait, Reba, Willie Nelson, George Jones, Dixie Chicks, Patty Loveless, Tim McGraw, Bela Fleck, Garth Brooks, Martina McBride…

NoClueBoy, I also prefer Shania’s early stuff to her current pop/country hits. Do you have her first CD, Shania Twain?

My daughter is ga-ga over Toby Keith, and my dad loves Willie Nelson. I just love their new video and song, “Whiskey for My Man, Beer for My Horses.” What a cool title for a country song!

Yes Yes Yes!

Perhaps one of the best love songs ever is on that CD.

What Made You Say That

Describes perfectly the giddy feeling mixed with fear that characterizes the moment you know you’ve fallen.

:::sigh:::

Yeah, I’m a Good Ol’ Boy, Southern Man, what have you, but that song is special to me…
Ivylass, you should see it LIVE

I’m a big country fan (not a Big Country fan), but I can’t stand the crop of top 40 acts that are stinking up the genre. Shania, Garth Brooks, Randy Travis and all their ilk are not to my liking at all. I vastly prefer Hank Sr. and Hank III to Hank Jr.
You can put me down as a big fan of…
Johnny Cash
Johnny Paycheck
George Jones
The Hag
Patsy Cline

and
Loretta Lynn

As far as newer country acts go, I like…
Neko Case
Carolyn Mark
Split Lip Rayfield
The Sadies
Uncle Tupelo
(not new, I know)
Son Volt
Wilco
Gillian Welch
The Handsome Family
Freakwater

and
The Meat Purveyors
to name a few

Check out Bloodshot Records if you are looking for some good stuff.

Yeah, I find that a lot of country fans are split between the old and the new. I grew up* with the old (Merle, George, Johnny…), but I do like most of the new guys.

Guess I’m just weird that way, like’n 'em both…

A long time ago (early 80s?), I happened upon a tape of Hank Williams (Sr) demo stuff, before he got signed to any label. The label on the tape is all smudged up, and the tape itself is almost worn out. But… hearing the evolution of some of his standards is quite educational. Loads of fun, too! That man was a true talent.

*thank God for AM radio, I had my own little transistor radio that I was never too far away from…

My dad and stepmom are both big country fans. They easily have a CD collection in the hundreds and I’m willing to bet that 99% of it’s country. Not the modern day stuff though. Jimmy Dickens, Patsy Cline, Lefty Frezzel, Marty Robbins, Charlie Pride, Gene Watson, and tons of other people I’d have no idea about if it weren’t for them.

'cause of them (and growing up in the South, I suppose) I grew up as a country fan but eventually grew apart from it. Over the years, I became more and more of a rock fan and grew more and more disdainful of country. The last straw came when I heard “Austin”, some song about an answering machine. I hated it so much that I quit listening to country as a whole soon afterwards.

Now I’m more into rock, pop, and metal. My favorite band is Tool, an industrial band, whereas before, it was Garth Brooks.

All that was two or three years ago though. I still like some country and about 25 of my 110 or so CDs is of that genre. The people I’ll readily admit to liking without being embarassed are Collin Raye and Martina McBride. I love both their voices and think Martina has the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard.

Other than those two, I also like Marty Robbins, Travis Tritt, Sawyer Brown, Confederate Railroad, and some others I can’t think of off the top of my head. I’m not a big fan of older country (early 80s and before) and I loathe most of the crao put out today (I’d eviscerate Kenny Chesney if given the oppurtunity, for example) but if it was popular in the early to mid 90’s, I’ll probably give it a listen.

I’m another country fan. I like them all, just about, but I really like George Strait, especially his stuff in the 80’s. I also tend to prefer 80’s country in general, especially anything that has a deep-sounding snare drum (especially a loping train-beat played on said snare drum with brushes – heavenly). Randy Travis, John Conlee, and this new guy Blake Shelton are other favorites. My favorite female singers are too many to list.

Honk if you like Hank!

Hank Williams
Hank Snow
Hank Thompson
Hank Jr.
Hank III

Hank you, Hank you, I’ll be here all week.

Count me in. Born and bred listening to country music and can’t go a week without some to soothe the savage soul.

In the CD player at this very moment: The Best of K.T. Oslin

Too many faves to list. The only ones I actively dislike are:

Toby Keith
Lori Morgan
Kenny Chesney and any of his clones

Count me in with the country music fans!
I love Allison Krauss, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Dixie Chicks, Vince Gill, Patty Loveless, Martina McBride, Brad Paisley, and Tim and Faith.

ivylass, I also love “Beer For My Horses.” It’s a great song!
I don’t like the newest Shania CD, and I hate Reba.

I’ve been into country for a few years myself. I absolutely love Alan Jackson (someone I see who hasn’t been mentioned much ;)). Dixie Chicks are amazing as well.

I’m the original country fan.

My favorites include Johnny Cash, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Martina McBride, Collin Raye, Montgomery Gentry and Mindy McCready.

“Beer for My Horses” is great, but “My Front Porch Looking In” is my current favorite.

I enjoy the music of Hal Ketchum. I have two of his albums:

Past the Point of Rescue

and

Sure Love

I also like Clint Black, Randy Travis, Dwight Yoakam, and George Strait.
