In 48 hours, I'll be a free man. Recommend a style!

…and the Army won’t have its claws in me anymore. This weekend is my last drill. It’ll be sad but it’ll be joyous too. I’ll miss the action, adventure, and status boost, but I won’t miss waking up early, wasting a weekend (resulting in a 12-day work week), and being away from home. I’ve got the money, resume creds, clearance, and prestige that they promised me, so I’ll all-around happy I gave the Army 7 years of my life.

But now it’s time to move on. I’m relatively fashion-inept. I can dress well enough to not be noticed, but I want to stand out. I want a makeover that will set me apart from others. Specifically, I want to know what to do with my hair. Right now, it’s slightly longer than my fingers are thick (3/4 in.?) and I have a very light goatee in between drills.

I look around and don’t really notice a men’s hairstyle or dominant facial style. It seems to be all over the place. So what’s popular nowadays? I have two weeks til the GF comes back from Germany, and I want to look deliciously handsome.

Woohoo! Congratulations. Wishing you luck and joy in your new Army-free life!

It’s hard to recommend a style without knowing what you look like, what your age is, and what your personality is like.

There are certain faces that look good with a little bit of facial hair, whereas, there are others that look good with just a clean-cut look.

Also, with fashion, it’s hard to just say “wear this” when we know nothing about you. For instance, it’d be weird to recommend a rockish, edgy type of style, if you’re shy, quiet, and reserved.

So maybe a few more details about yourself would help, with maybe a picture or two, if you wouldn’t mind sharing.

Like the post above, this is hard to do w/o knowing what you look like. But since you did ask what is popular, I can help there at least. Your hair sounds pretty short, not as many options. Have you ever tried using products like wax or pomade in your hair? One of the more predominant looks nowadays is a more messy-type look while still being well-groomed (fresh haircut). When your hair is mostly dry to dry, use a bit of wax or pomade and kind of mess up the top. The product won’t leave your hair all crusty like gel does, and you can re-do it whenever. Like pretty much do spikes but then mess them up a bit. Kind of like this: Hairfinder - 404 Not Found But you can just keep messing with it until you figure out what looks good.

I won’t attempt to be a fashion stylist without knowing more, so I’ll just say CONGRATS FOR BEING DONE! Thanks for your service.

I’m a 24 yr old white, short, white collar government contractor. I’m very Polish, big nose, long forehead, darker than Irish but lighter than Spanish, and only 5’6". Due to my Army years, I’ve got a slightly muscular build and otherwise thin. I’m rather outgoing but average in my tastes. That is, I’m not a skateboarder, geek (other than the SDMB quality), punk rocker, or anything. I play chess (note the username) and like clubbing. My hair is brown

Does that help? I really like the choice already offered. Right now, I gel my hair and spike the front. I switch back and forth between the rest of it being messily tossed and being combed forward.

I should note, though, that I have a wicked cow lick in the front over my eye and a ‘poof’ in the back corner that sticks up, even when soaking wet. My one friend says I have a hurricane in the front and a volcano in the back. Because of this, I’d like to grow my hair longer and preferable detract from my forehead. I’ve had a receding hairline since kindergarten. I’ll post a pic later if I can.

While we’re on the subject, has anyone ever come up with a good response to this? It’s so weird going “You’re welcome” or “Thanks” so I just awkwardly smile, nod, and maybe mumble “Yes, yes” under my breath.

I dropped by to say a couple of things. Yes one of them was “Thank you for serving our country. I appreciate it.”

The other thing I came in to say, is you’re not alone. A buddy of mine always said that the hardest part of being a civilian again was figuring out what to wear every day.

To answer your question. I think either a follow up “thank you” is appropriate (to indicate you’re pleased that you had support, and were appreciated). “You’re Welcome” is equally appropriate when you’re thanked by someone.
