In Bangkok, It's a Tough Life for Elephants

Story here.

I hate seeing elephants inside this dirty, sweltering city. But since the logging ban, it’s true that the mahouts often have little choice but to bring them in. It’s illegal to bring an elephant into the city, but they’re a common sight in tourist areas. The touts sell bags of bananas – or cucumbers if they’re real bastards – to tourists for about 60 cents a bag to fed to the elephants. From time to time, there’s a general roundup of elephants in the city, and they’re booted out. There was a serious suggestion once by the government that microchips be placed under their skin to track them through the city. This resulted in howls of mirth. I mean C’mon! If you need a microchip to track an elephant in the city, then it’s about time for a white cane and a tin cup.
