I bet that was an artifact of me signing in on my phone. I didn’t seem to be able to remember my password. When resetting, the boards just said they had “an acct” related to my email. I think the 1 reflects my difficulties when the boards chang d over. I didn’t even notice it
Are @Dinsdale and @Dinsdale1 the same user?
Yes, Dinsdale1 was the first login Dins used when the board migrated and he had trouble getting in. Then it was corrected, so he went back to Dinsdale.

-Well that’s a relief off my mind. I was going frantic with worry.
… and what’s more, he knew how to treat a female impersonator.
I can help you upgrade your machine, but I need to know what iMac it is (post the serial number, visible in “About this Mac”), and the current OS version (also visible there).
Don’t you need his credit card number too?
Well, somebody’s credit card number.
Funny.
All kidding aside, I can help him with his little problem. I know exactly why the previous helpers had problems installing a newer OS.
Maybe @Dinsdale2 will have better luck.
mmm
Yeah this is a difficult and moving target, philosophically we try to support the current version plus the last 2 “operating system release” versions. So Android 10, 8, 9. iOS 14, 13, 12. But you can and should update the browser independently of the operating system…
Dropping IE11 support was a huge weight off our shoulders though, I’ll tell you that…
So you don’t think it’s just that his hardware has aged out?
It is an official thing, or some sort of hack or workaround?
I’m genuinely curious. The only thing I could think that he might not have tried is making sure he updated to each subsequent version, in order.
I hope you get it fixed, Dinsdale. I would miss you.
Apple embeds a “sell by” date in their standalone installers. If he is trying to install an OS which is 5 years old (which may be as new as his machine can go), then he needs to set the clock back for the Install to proceed. The error message is very misleading (something like “this installer is corrupted”).
If he forwards his machine’s serial number to me, I can find out exactly how new an OS it supports.
Ah, interesting. Of course Apple would do something like that. That’s definitely information for me to file away for later. At least there’s still a workaround.
I wish there was a button I could push to upgrade all the slow, ancient Qualcomm dreck hardware out there. Sigh. Android is fine, it’s the terribad Qualcomm SoCs inside that make people suffer.
Did you know the fastest Android phones available right now are about as fast as an iPhone 7? I kid you not. Absolute truth.
Well, I bit the bullet and bought a new computer. Hopefully it will allow me to do the 5 or so things I like to do on a computer for the next 5 years or so.
It resisted all attempts to upgrade the OS. At one point it decided I could no longer type comments into Facebook. Then, when I would try to go to one site or another, it would tell me that my connection was not private, or that my time/date were wrong.
But it was weird, as my computer decided it wanted to do fewer and fewer things for me, it was pretty easy for me to decide, “Well, I can easily do without THAT!”
Work has been even more boring and pointless than usual, so I expect you’ll be seeing a bit of me around here! Funny, tho. Take 4 months off, and it looks like a lot of the same (or similar) threads are still active…
Glad that’s sorted, eh. Welcome back (again)!
We thought Spiny Norman had got you.
Welcome back!
