In case anyone has been wondering [where was Dinsdale]

I haven’t posted in a while. A couple of weeks ago, I lost the ability to access the boards from my pc. Changed nothing. One eve it worked, next morning it didn’t.

A mod tried to help, but saw nothing in my profile. I cleared my cache, no change.

My pc is 11 yrs old. I tried to update my OS, but no luck. I’m able to access via my phone, but I don’t like the experience.

Just wanted to let anyone who might care why I’m not around much.

Probably you have an old browser that’s no longer compatible with the board.

Try using an up-to-date browser on your PC.

If @Dinsdale1’s computer is 11 years old, he may well still be running Win7 (assuming a PC, and not a Mac). I think that Chrome is still supporting Win7, but not sure about other browsers.

I’m using Firefox on Win7. No problems so far.

Sorry guys . (I hate typIng long texts on my phone). Computer is iMac running OS X. W my kid’s help I tried to update to cap and Sierra but could not get it to work. At some point I may try to call apple- but not something I’m in a hurry to do

I use chrome - also have safari.

ALL I do online is check 3 MB’s. Fb, email, weather, and occasional google/YouTube. Nothing else changed - just the dope. This is the kind of thing I despise about tech - when something changes and I have no idea why. My usual response is to decide I can do without whatever became problematic

I’ll miss you guys - but I hate fucking w/tech more

But are they the latest versions of Chrome and Safari?

The board must be using the latest version of javascript, and no doubt upgrading from time to time. You are probably using old versions of browsers, that don’t support the new features.

Try downloading the latest version of whatever browser you prefer, and see if it works.

There you are, you little dickens!

Wanna’ throw a couple hundred at a new laptop, primarily for web stuff but quite workable for much more ?

Or any number of similar options at a comparable price point.

My OS X Mac has been a brick for a number of years. It was well past its sell-by date.

Yeah that’s why I was trying to update my os. It was unsuccessful. Had 2 computer pros FaceTiming w me, tried to progressively update to el cap then to high Sierra- but no luck. Pretty much hit my limit of time/effort I’m willing to put into something like this

Price isn’t a real issue. Could buy a new laptop or tablet. I don’t care pc vs Mac , but most of my family and phone is apple. Just not in a hurry to do so simply to get sdmd. Maybe when I lose the ability to do a couple more of the 5-6 things I do…

Could we do something to make ourselves more desirable? Some kind of makeover, maybe even plastic surgery? You know that think you’re always asking about, maybe we could try that.

Just kidding around, quirky computer problems are the most annoying problems there are, hope it doesn’t get worse.

I was making snacks.

Ha! Maybe get rid of that one guy…

Didn’t intend a pity party. Considering using my phone- but I really dislike using my phone for anything other than phone calls/texts.

Just so weird that this one thing stopped working. I can access the dope page, but when I try to open the boards, I get a blank page

I’ve offered the most likely explanation, and told you the simple solution.

If you’re not prepared to try it, that’s up to you.

It’s not impossible that your advice will help, if something in his system got messed up.

That said, Chrome by default automatically updates, so he should be running the latest version of Chrome that runs on his OS. (He can’t run any version released in 2021, as they require El Capitan, which is what I assume he means by “upgrade to cap”.)

Also, as far as I know, Safari updates with the OS (or, at least, it did before 2015), so I doubt he has the option to upgrade Safari.

@codinghorror: do you know the earliest version of Safari and Chrome which Discourse supports? All I could find on the website was that you support the “latest browsers.”

I do note you can get the blank white screen for other reasons. I originally did due to a flaky connection. It was enough to load other website (albeit more slowly than normal), but not Discourse.

Gotta say, if I couldn’t access The Dope, I would get SO much done…

This link will quickly apprise you on your system. Run it separately in each browser

“Not prepared to try…”
I did try, but was unable to upgrade my Os, which would allow me to upgrade my browser.

Apologies, I’m not a Mac person.

Requirements for the latest browsers:

  • Chrome says you need at least OS X 10.11
  • Firefox needs at least OS X 10.12
  • Opera needs at least OS X 10.11
  • Safari needs at least OS X 10.11

If you have an 11 year old machine, it’s probably running 10.6, and you’re out of luck.

The only solution I can suggest is to buy a new laptop.

You were most recently posting as Dinsdale (without the 1). Could the different login be the problem?
