Racist!

Parody threads are supposed to have links.
Wait.
You’re serious?
Some of my best friends are nappy headed ho’s.
Good one!
It’s always Poland. In fact, this reminds me of that time 1939 when Hitler’s Germany invaded Poland.
Clearly, my fellow Dopers, Imus/ Sharpton/ and 18-20 year olds everywhere are, in fact, worse than Hitler.
I’m glad I could so wonderfully sum up the entire situation for you all. Thank me later for bringing an end to the Imus debate.
I’ll be here all week.
So uh, Imus calls white folks “nappy headed jigaboos”?
Cite?
CMC fnord!
Is anyone really seriously supporting him? Or is it, in fact, perfectly acceptable in public discourse in this nation these days to call a group of young women nappy-headed whores? 'Cause if the latter is true, no words can express my disappointment.

[li]In the context of having someone slam you (by race/sex/religion/whatever); isn’t it different when done by your average (wo)man on the street rather than a nationally syndicated radio personality? I would think so.[/li][li]Within the context of race; are white people ever called “nappy headed”? If not (and I’ve certainly never seen that happen personally), than what other reason would there be for using an epithet that is specifically limited, if not to denote race? By the same token, designating “ho” also appears to be geared at pointing out the female aspect. Or at least that’s what all I get as obvious to me.[/li][/ol]
Finally, I wouldn’t have called for the asshole’s head on a platter, but I have no problem with him finally being dropped for his continuing bad behavior. And I somewhat understand the Rutger’s players’ attitude about all this. If all of a sudden say, J-Lo wanted to pick a fight with me inside the pages of People magazine, it would bewilder and hurt me. Especially if it was over something that could be partially aimed at me as true (say that I’m female ----> ho?), but the rest obviously not (like curly headed). Add to that if I’m still relatively young, you bet your butt I’d be just a bit more than pissed off… unfortunately for quite a while.
I simply view this as that taking of responsibility that we see advocated here on the boards. He has his freedom of speech and in turn, there are consequences. A wee balance to the world.
On the preview that I missed: Damn you CMC!
Dude yourself. I’m no dude and I find your insult hateful and my joy in starting this thread has been tainted forever by you. (If you’re white then I’ll let it pass and won’t attempt to get you fired from your job)
Never said Clay was attractive. Clay himself said he was the best looking boxer ever to enter the ring. Remember Leon Spinks Ali touted himself as Tennessee, and Spinks as Rutgers. We’ve been there before folks, talking about male athlete looks without nary a wimper.
To answer your last question, where were you when Condoleeza’s looks were questioned on this board. Or Ann Coulter?
Where have you been for the past several years.
Funny, my next mailing list was going to include this topic.
I had dinner with my grandparents the other night as the Imus news was breaking and my grandmother mentioned that she didn’t like Al Sharpton because he was “too over the top”.
Well, of course Al Sharpton is “too over the top” and “in your face”. Spraypainting swaztikas on someone’s garage door is “over the top”. Denying Person A’s access to Person B’s end-of-life process because because you don’t approve of the “lifestyle” is “over the top”. A radio shock-jock calling a group of young women who toss a ball into a hoop “nappy haired hos” is “over the top”. So here’s to “over the top” people: Long may they reign, and long may the rest of us look upon them with amazed bemusement at their courage…or foolhardiness, as the case may be.
But as you disagree with those who tilt at their enemy’s windmills I hope you take a moment - however brief - to examine the reason(s) behind your animosity, just to ensure it’s valid and not simply knee-jerk.
Spike Lee uses the terms “jigaboo” and “wanabee” as a commentary on social divisions in the black community. While I don’t think it’s a particularly great movie, I don’t see how anybody who has actually seen the movie can think that Lee endorses the use of either term. I think you need to do more research.
What irritates me about these discussions about racist terminology is that people always ignore the fact that words have meaning in context. Was Imus using the terms as a commentary on social divisions in the black community? Was he using it in some other non-racist fashion? I don’t know because I don’t really care about this scandal, but your OP completely ignores the issue. If he did use the terms in a non-racist way, why haven’t you posted anything to explain the usage?
Your OP gives me no indication that Imus isn’t a racist or sexist jerk. As I said, I don’t have an opinion either way, but if you were trying to sway me to your side, you’ve decidedly failed.
The more I think about this, the dumber this statement is. In the movie School Daze, the terms are clearly used as an insult. Anybody who was attentive to black culture and who had seen the movie would know that the terms are dicey territory and likely to provoke offense when used.
Is this one of those Scylla-like satire threads that I never understand?
Oops, if it’s satire, I apologize for the tone of my last post.
No, he’s really this stupid.
Yeesh! Try reeadng this again with some of that “research” you claim have done.
You do not find anything racist in some old white guy using disparaging racist terms for one group of young women just because he was praising another group of young women who were of a similar racial makeup? So it is OK to call Queen Beatrix a blockhead while describing Queen Elizabeth as a gracious lady, because they’re both white?
As noted, jigaboo and wannabe were used insultingly in the movie from which you think they were taken. (Hint: jigaboo was a particularly nasty white-on-black slur when Imus was a lad, years before Spike Lee was born. Ho is a slur, regardless of context.)
I’m willing to consider the overall flap to be a bit overblown, (Imus is paid to entertain people by being an asshole), but to claim that his remarks were not, in fact, racist and sexist is simpy to deny reality.
Only one of those definitions is an insult, the bold ones showing in common usage the word is gender neutral.
Now you find a definition of “jigaboo” that isn’t an insult.
CMC fnord!
If you are that insulted by someone calling you ‘dude’, I can only imagine how devastating it would be for someone to call you a ‘nappy-headed ho’ and 'jigaboo, not to mention ‘poltroon’. I would think, therefore, that a little more sympathy for the Rutgers team by you would be in order.
Meanwhile, if your joy in starting this thread has been tainted at all, it’s most likely tainted by the slowly dawning realization that your premise has no merit.
The article you cited supports none of the above, but so fucking what if it did? Are you seriously going to stand by the claim that one professional boxer talking trash about an opponent prior to a fight is exactly the same as a radio jock, with no vested interest in the outcome, gratuitously insulting a college basketball team for its looks, after the contest is over?
In the former case, not particpating in the thread, I reckon. Where were you?
In the latter, probably saying rude things about Ms. Coulter but not in fact discussing her attractiveness or lack of same, because that has sweet fuck all to do with what a hateful bitch she is.
I can agree that a mountain is being made out of a mole hill to some extent. I’m not an Imus fan and don’t listen except in passing. In the last few days it’s been said that he has a history of unacceptable comments such as this one. I can’t imagine anyone saying it’s *not *a racist comment. It clearly is. In his mind he meant it as a joke but being a nationally heard media personality he dam well should have known better. This was not an offhand comment said in private, accidentally overheard and blown out of proportion. The dumbass said it on the air.
Of all the issues we should be concerned about this isn’t high on the list but he gets what he gets. Those type of off hand comments should be completely unacceptable. He can retire and focus on his charity work as penance. It that such a horrible fate for him?
