Can anybody really feel sorry for Imus? He decided that he would like to be a professional asshole. If you want to be edgy and out-there, you should expect to get fired a lot more frequently than he has been. It looks like he wants the reputation for being edgy without taking any of the consequences. You want to be Lenny Bruce? Bathroom’s down the hall.
I think it is very possible to do so, which is why Imus is suspended and losing advertisers by the score. However, this has ramifications far beyond him, especially now that Sharpton is involved in the controversy.
Al Sharpton has never had to account fully for his horrible racial behavior of the recent past, yet feels qualified to judge the sins of others in this regard. He is assisted in this by a media that is painfully aware of this country’s racial tensions but desperately does not want to cover racial controversies in any way that will make the black community or a prominent black politician look bad.
Whatever Imus did, he hasn’t done anything close to what Sharpton has done over the years. Still, Imus will likely lose his show because of what he did. This is right and proper, and I’ll celebrate when it finally happens.
Al Sharpton has a radio show. He spoke at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. What someone said above of the racism of an elder stateman certainly applies to Sharpton, except that he has done little good to atone for his acts.
Who is speaking out against him? Who is taking away his speaking slots and media gigs? Who has that kind of courage? None of the networks and nobody in the Democratic Party, thus far.
Mr. Motto, could you answer my question in post #59?
Well, let’s see:
There’s this
And of course, this too.
But no, he’s not a “racist at heart.”
It means whore. I don’t know a woman who doesn’t find the term offensive. There may be circumstances under which friends “playfully” call each other ho, just like they might playfully call each other bitch, but it is usually a word you use when you want to wound. It’s not a word you would ever call your mother, your sister, your co-worker, or your boss.
The influence of Al Sharpton is greatly exaggerated by the right, because he is a convenient foil, as this episode demonstrates. I had no idea he had a radio show until this week.
He spoke at the Democratic convention because he was a candidate until very late in the process, never getting more than 10% of the vote in any state. Just being in the race, no matter how far behind, gets you on the podium. He had delegates.
Sharpton is an opportunist when it comes to racial issues. After this dies down, no one will hear from him until the next issue blows up. His influence is negligible. Imus would have been fired regardless of Sharpton’s participation. If management is to be believed, the pressure came from the network’s news employees, who said they didn’t want to be associated with him anymore.
Seriously, I don’t think Sharpton or Jackson had much to do with this. But I’m not surprised that Imus defenders are whining about them. Whining about the mean ole black men is par the course. Wish a new schtick could be invented because this one is played out.
NOW sponsored a huge letter writing campaign in response to all of this. MSNBC was their main target. I guess people don’t seem to realize that in addition to racist remarks, Imus’ commentary was also sexist. All the attention goes to Sharpton and Jackson, when really all they did was say the same thing plenty of other people were saying. The media simply likes to stick mics in their faces and treat them like spokesmen.
Well, if blacks would just stop getting so upset every time a white guy says something racist there wouldn’t be a problem, now would there?
How long must white racists suffer this unjust persecution?
First they came for the antisemites
and I did not speak out
because I was not a antisemite.
Then they came for the racists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a racist…
CMC fnord!
Just who would that be? Kinda hard to ruin a reputation with an allegation that nobody believes isn’t it?
Bob Abrams, for one, just off the top of my head. The Reverend’s behavior in that episode was beyond reprehensible. The reason the right loves Sharpton so much is that they don’t have to exaggerate with him.
Is it really so hard to understand that a word can be sexist depending on the context in which it is used? Are you really this stupid? Where is your explanation of how Imus’s use is non-sexist?
You’re not borrowing the phrase from Spike Lee. Go watch the freaking movie and see how its used. It’s not used in Sparta vs. Athens fashion. It’s used in a derogatory fashion.
Yes, because if Sharpton and Jackson weigh in on an issue, that automatically puts them on the wrong side of it. I’ll bet if Sharpton and Jackson said the world was round, you’d be in here to tell us how flat it really is.
What a stupid, stupid, stupid. Dutchman is defending a radio host he doesn’t listen to based on a movie he hasn’t seen. I hope you will all tune in for my Pit thread on Albert Camus’ The Stranger and the Qu’ran - in the original French and Arabic, respectively.
:smack:
I know Dutchman is an idiot, but this is really a straggering display of moronitude. What kind of a freaking numbskull do you have to be to talk about the acceptability of the words “ho” and “nappy” when you don’t fucking know what they mean? Do you think you’re the fucking Sun and we would all wither and die if you held your tongue for once?
“Points?” You think they deserve points for using something from a Spike Lee movie as an insult? How does that prove the remarks weren’t racist? If only Imus had been smart enough to talk about the Rutgers players while doing an impression of Mammy from Gone with the Wind, everything would have been fine!
I just want to say this is the funniest thing I’ve read all day. Everybody knows what it means except you. That’s because you’re stupid. But your assumption that everyone else is as stupid as you is fall-down hilarious.
Yeah, but didn’t you know that “nappy” sounds like “snappy,” and therefore should be considered cool, rather than insulting. (See The Moronic Dutchman’s post #47 in this thread)
I diagnosed him as stupid right when he said “Cassius Clay”.
Sometimes it takes me a while.
I feel the same way about the word “kike.” It looks just like “kite,” and flying kites is good clean fun. So what are all those silly Jews complaining about?
Yeah, I saw. We would get better posts on this topic from Capt. McAllister from The Simpsons, the guy who runs the Frying Dutchman. Or from the Davy Jones character in Pirates of the Caribbean. Or from Davy Jones of The Monkees. Or an actual monkey. A real-life monkey, hopped up on fermented bananas and flinging shit at the monitor would have made for a better post.
I am sorry if this has been answered already.
What does ‘nappy-headed’ mean?
A nappy to me means something you tie around a baby. Usually called a diaper in the USA.
I realise a ‘ho’ means a whore. But many people use the word just to mean ‘girl’, don’t they?
No, they don’t. If you called a random woman that, you’d get slapped. If their boyfriend/husband were there, it’d be worse.
SHHHHH.
Yes, blinkingblinking, it just means girl. If you come to America, you should call any woman you see a ho’. It’s what’s done here, really.
People refer to girls as ho’s in Australia? Do tell. What do you say? “I have to pick up my ho from work?”
You know what a whore is, right? Why in the world would you think that’s interchangeable with the word girl?
Okay, I think blinkingblinking thinks it’s a common American term, as might appear to someone who has limited exposure to American culture. It’s not. Also, nappy was explained in another thread:
