In defence of Russia

I like that the Moskva is on the map at its “place of departure to the bottom”.

Ah, the good old “Stabbed in the back!” routine. Gotta have them excuses for failure, amiright?

Speaking of stabbing…

Chaos is growing in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military after video released by Russian state media shows a fight that turned deadly between soldiers at a military camp near Moscow.

Yeah, this whole recreating the Soviet Union thing is going so well for Putin.

Komrad! I had to check on your health, for surely you must be holed up in your dacha getting blackout drunk on vodka right about now! Or have you not yet heard the latest news? It’s not just one Major General who was commanding some minor unimportant sector of the front a vital part of the front who has been shitcanned for complaining telling the truth to his superiors about conditions on the front!

Russian sources reported on July 15 that the Russian military command dismissed 106th Guards Airborne (VDV) Division Commander Major General Vladimir Seliverstov. [1] Russian sources stated that the reason for Seliverstov’s dismissal is currently unknown but speculated that it could be associated with Seliverstov’s reputation for speaking up on behalf of his soldiers.[2] Russian sources claimed that the 106th VDV Division has been operating in the Bakhmut area since January, and ISW has recently observed the 106th VDV Division’s 137th Guards VDV Regiment defending against Ukrainian counteroffensive operations on Bakhmut’s northern flank.[3] A Russian milblogger has claimed that elements of the 106th VDV Division are also supporting Russian defensive operations south of Bakhmut.[4] Relatives of mobilized personnel serving in the 137th VDV Regiment notably appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tula Oblast Governor Alexei Dyumin, and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in April about poor conditions and lack of supplies in the unit.[5] Vocal discontent about conditions in areas where Russian forces are defending against Ukrainian counteroffensive operations may have prompted Seliverstov to appeal to the Russian military command, which may have contributed to his dismissal. ISW has not observed confirmation of Seliverstov’s dismissal, but Russian reporting about the dismissal follows a pattern similar to that of previous claims of command changes that have proven true.[6]

Seliverstov’s dismissal may be a part of an ongoing purge of insubordinate commanders by the Russian military command and may suggest that the corrosion of the Russian chain of command in Ukraine is accelerating.

He was defending Bakhmut, that unimportant part of the front line that Russia didn’t spend almost a year taking other place that the Ukrainians are counterattacking right now! Don’t worry though, he was just the commander of some shitty quality unit formed from the partial mobilization the 106th Guards Airborne Division of the VDV, the elite of the Russian military!

What’s really surprising about that it that it was shown on Russian State media.

Bridge thoughts.
I wonder why Russia has not started putting stationary defences along it? Floating barriers and such. These are military solutions used in the past and maybe present. Nets, cables supported by floats. It is very long. And there is naval traffic here and there. But large sections should be able to be protected by such barriers. Then concentrate active detection and defence on the open areas.
By the way. Congratulations to Ukraine for another hit on it. It is so stupid to hear Russia call them terrorist attacks. Legitimate military target.

Not enough Bang for the Buck.
It seems to me that a lot of countries are not getting enough real, effective weaponry for what they are paying. There are amazing weapon systems out there. Top tier and top price. But so expensive they are not produced in enough quantity. So complex that they are not battle hard. Supply chain to repair and replace them in battle loss numbers, lacking. It has been a long time since a large near peer war has happened. This war is highlighting terrible gaps in supply line capability for weapons and ammunition. Little or no fast ramp up capabilities of production. Everyone seemed to be geared for quick wars against enemies with shallow resources. Standing and ongoing. This war is a wake up call for all countries. You need depth. On hand large stockpiles. Supply chain kept ready. Idle in peace time, but in place and ready. Not required to be built over years.
Your military industrial complex needs to be less free market, more strictly controlled by planned needs and with shaved profit margins. More apolitical. More technical, tactical. The high tech bleeding edge tools need to be backed up with mass of dumber force.
The front lines need to be held by mass of weapons and ammunition. The attacks can include the fancier stuff. When the time and materiel is right to support them properly.
Countries need more bang for the buck!

Or we could quit using force to get what we want. Cooperate and negotiate more. Probably more cost effective.

And how did that work out for your hero, Putin? I mean, that’s what he tried first, wasn’t it? “Give me your country.” No problem there, huh?

Idiot.

You’re basically telling a rape victim that they need to sit back and enjoy it, if they didn’t fight back so hard things would be so much easier.

You’re a disgusting piece of shit.

We = Russia, 100%. It is all on the shoulders of Russia. Putin will go down as one of the largest scumbags in history.

No defence of Russia despite this thread.

Yep. The fundamental flaw with pacifism is that it takes two to keep the peace, but only one to break it. If you’re not able to kick ass and take names, why would anyone who was ready (and willing) to kick ass respect your “negotiations”?

Strong men are going to strong-man. The rest of us have to be ready to stop that.

It’s good to talk, but it doesn’t work in this instance. Putin has an imperialist mindset and he has made it explicitly clear that he doesn’t recognise Ukraine’s right to choose its own destiny. It’s like telling the indigenous peoples of Asia, Africa and the Americas in previous centuries that they should have negotiated more to avoid being conquered and incorporated into the empires of European countries.

OK, let’s negotiate.

  1. Russia withdraws completely from Ukraine, including Crimea.
  2. Russia formally and irrevocably recognises Ukraine as the sovereign nation that it is.
  3. Russia repatriates all of the Ukrainian citizens it kidnapped.
  4. Russia admits that it launched a war of aggression against a sovereign nation.
  5. Russia withdraws from the UN Security Council.
  6. Russia pays to rebuild the buildings and infrastructures it destroyed.
  7. Russia pays Ukrainian citizens for the property it stole from them.
  8. Russia pays reparations to the victims and/or families killed or injured in their war of aggression.

Points 1 through 4 are non-negotiable, since Russia launched a war of aggression against the sovereign nation of Ukraine. Point 5 can be negotiated with the UN.

But Russia’s position is ‘Her are our peace terms: You capitulate completely and formally become a Russian vassal.’ No.

Negotiation rests on the underlying assumption that each side has something the other side wants, but which the first side is willing to give up, in exchange for something.

So, Kedikat, how about providing this list? Surely knowing what is on the table is step one in any negotiation.

My post was in general you morons. Not to this war in particular.

We are the morons to assume that in a thread about a particular war, when you’re writing a post about a particular war, one last line of your post is also about that particular war? (When you’ve made no indication otherwise.)

Not to mention, you’ve been largely supportive of the aggressor of a war in this thread. An unprovoked war that had no justification except that which was completely manufactured and easily disproven (not to mention laughable on the surface).

So yeah, pretty hypocritical, not to mention extremely stupid.

Every accusation an admission. You morons.

Dan

Even ignoring your stance in favor of negotiating an end to the war (sorry, wars in general) which would strangely favor Russia if there were a cease fire in place and cooperation (I’m assuming read: end the sanctions), everything you wrote is as usual a combination of 1) wrong and 2) nothing that hasn’t already been known for a very, very long time.

Take for example:

You seem to have missed that a full-scale conventional war has been going on for more than 500 days, and both sides have or had huge stockpiles or arms and ammunition. That these stockpiles start to become depleted, and nations can’t sustain continued ammunition consumption on day 500 at the rate they were able to on day 1 is neither new nor something that hasn’t been commented on multiple times throughout this thread. It’s been pointed out to you as little as less than two weeks ago that there is a shell crisis in every major war since indirect fire artillery became a thing, and oddly it seems to become a thing roughly a year or so after the war started.

What would be novel on your part is to admit that one of the major lessons of this war is that having huge stockpiles that aren’t properly maintained combined with a kleptocratic government results in your supposedly huge stockpiles turn out to be not quite so huge, nor as useful when falsifying reports, stealing everything that isn’t nailed down, and not doing basic maintenance on equipment left in open air storage is the norm for your government.

Equally interesting would be for you to note that

Is exactly the model Russia attempted, and that it has failed miserably for them, in no small part due to the aforementioned kleptocratic nature of its government. Even worse than just not working, buying into their own propaganda has been catastrophic for them. Where are all of those high-tech bleeding edge T-14 Armata tanks? Su-57 Felon stealth fighters? For a real laugh, how about those exoskeleton combat suits Russia had been crowing about for years prior to the war?

I mean Russia had 300,000 of these super suits delivered in 2020. Allegedly. For entertainment purposes only.

The only thing that tops this was the 2019 Ghanan arms show. Which really says something when the Ghanan super-soldier outfits look like bad cosplay costumes.

Next up: Putin hires The Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka* (the Ghana Sooper-Combat Suit designer) to run the Wagner Group.

*I think I got an e-mail from someone with that name just the other day, informing me of a huge sum of money that he was willing to split with me for a bit of cash up front.

A lot of countries. Seems pretty general.
And I am encouraging countries in general to be wiser with their defence budgets. I am not being pro or anti any countries in the post.

Except that, come the next war, you’ll be posting the same “Can’t we all just get along?” nonsense. Until you can explain exactly how to ensure that no selfish asshole ever becomes leader of a major country ever again, this kind of thing will keep happening.

You don’t stop bullies by asking them nicely to stop bullying people.
