I am wondering just how effective the “protein style” burgers are in keeping to a no-carb diet.
For anyone not familiar with the concept (I’m not sure how many places do this - In n Out is the only place I’ve seen), “protein style” just does away with the bun and wraps the burger in a big wad of lettuce. At least, that’s what it looks like…I’m also not sure if there are any other modifications going on there (hence the post :)).
Also, I prefer my In n Out burgers “animal style”. Is this modification kosher for a no-carb diet? Heh - I’m not sure what exactly it means, I only know it tastes damn good.
Lastly, how many burgers are too much? I’ve read that potatoes are a no-no for a no-carb diet, so there go the french fries. If I substitute more burgers for the rest of the meal, am I doing myself a disservice? One plan I read indicated that an unlimited amount of approved no-carb foods could be eaten while on the diet.
At first I thought that you’d have to be in complete denial to think that simply losing the bun constitutes going on a diet, but if you can eat In n Out and lose weight, sign me up!
Thanks…
Long time Atkid here, lose the bun and ketchup and eat all the burgers you want - really, Don’t have time to go into more then that.
Generally, if strictly non-carb diet is what you want, then the burger ‘n’ lettuce is fine.
Now, as for Atkins, I believe the philosophy isn’t to just endlessly scarf down burgers, but you’ll have to read the last book. Essentially, some carbs can/should be introduced (like whole wheat, fruits, etc), and Atkins doesn’t mean eat bacon and red meat all day without guidance.
But there are ‘no-carb’ diets where the only concern = no carbs. Atkins is a bit more specific than ‘just don’t eat carbs’.
I wasn’t necessarily trying to go for the Atkins diet, just a general no-carb approach. I understand that some meats are worse than others and that you really can’t just eat double-doubles all day. But if losing the bun will really work, then great.
I am doing a modified Atkins and we eat at In-N-Out a lot!
You can still do an “animal-style, protien-style” burger. Animal-style means everything on it plus grilled onions in In-N-Out-speak. When I do protien-style, I also get it without spread, partky because of the possible sugars in it, but mostly because it’s a lot less messy!
Losing the bun helps, no doubt about it.
Peeve- the last time I drove through and ordered a DD & a three-by-three, both protien-style, the kid asked me if I wanted fries with that! Hell yes I want fries, but obviously I won’t be having any! Sheesh!
Yes, those fries have really grown on me. When I first started eating at In n Out regularly, I hated them to the point of not ordering them sometimes. A few thousand double-doubles later (well, maybe not that many :)) and I can hardly live without them.
Thanks for the info though - I wanted to ask this question partly because of hidden carbs in the spread and stuff…I might go sans spread, but it is so good, I might not be able to resist.
