Let’s go to the absolute authority on regional fast food choices: The Beastie Boys.
(from The New Style, on Licensed to Ill)
“I chill at White Castle 'cause it’s the best
But I’m fly at Fatburger when I’m way out west”
So the answer is, obviously, Fatburger
Last week I had a Double-Double. It was good, as they always are; but the fries were so-so. They stay good for about five minutes, which isn’t long enough to get back to my flat.
Anyway, this thread prompted me to have a Fatburger. I haven’t had one in years. I went down to the closest Fatburger (on Sepulveda at Sawtelle, next to Spudnuts). To keep the comparison fair, I had the Fatburger dressed in the same manner as the Double-Double: Cheese, lettuce, pickles, tomato, mayonaise. No chili, like the last one I had oh, so long ago.
The first thing I noticed was that a Double Fatburger w/cheese is about 50% larger than the Double-Double. The next thing was that the fries were still tasty when I got home. (Seeing the size of the burger, however, I only had a few before they went into a Zip-Lok in the freezer. Note to self: If you want fries with a Fatburger, only get one patty of beef.
Now for the taste test. Could it be…? Yes! There’s pepper on the meat! Very nice! When I make burgers at home, you can be they’re loaded down with pepper and some salt. With the memory of the recent Double-Double in my mind, I must say that the Fatburger is better. It’s bigger and they put salt and pepper on the meat.
Fatburger wins.
Very tasty burgers there, but Fatburger is better. Between Hamburger Habit and In-N-Out? Hm. Tougher choice. I’ll have to reserve judgement on that one. One thing Hamburger Habit has over both Fatburger and In-N-Out is their french fries cooked in canola oil. They have a lighter taste and are crispier.
The only real problem with Hamburger Habit is the bloody traffic. That intersection is rather crowded, and when you do get into the Tiniest Strip Mall in West L.A. there is often no place to park. (It pays to have a motorcycle!)
Anyone in the L.A. area ever try a burger at ‘Mo’ Better Meaty Meat Burgers’? No, I swear to god I’m not making that name up! Really! It’s at the corner of Pico and Fairfax. They make what I think is the best damned burger in all of L.A. I’ve heard alot of people say Cassell’s (on 6th close to downtown) is the best, but I prefer MBMMB.
Oh, as for the original question: chalk me up for In N Out over Fatburger.
Anamorphic: It used to be Meaty Meat Burgers, but it burned down. When it was rebuilt, they added the “Mo Better”. At a place I used to work, the receptionist was the mother of the owner of (MB)MMB. I’ve driven by it many times, but I never seem to be hungry when I do. I keep meaning to try it.
There was a place at the intersection of Washington Blvd. and Washington Pl. called Gooey Louie’s. I’d only been there once, and my burger was slightly damaged when someone cut me off and I had to jam on my brakes. It’s not there anymore.
dude. In n Out Fries are great, yall are crazy. they actually take whole potatoes and cut throw them into a fry cutting thinging thats directly over the deep fryer. They actually taste like potatoes and not vegetable oil, so maybe thats the gripe, but I loves em.
The Urban Legend when I was growing up in vegas was that In and Out actually paid WAY about the fast food standard wage, and as such was a fairly competitive job to get. our Class valeditorians tried to work there and whatnot. This expalins why the quality of the prep and the quality of the service was- in vegas at least- top notch.
Before they franchized out to vegas we used to ditch school and drive some 200 miles to the Outlet Mall in Barstow, CA, which had the closest In and Out, eat, shop for a few minutes and then get in the car and head back. them were the days…
The problem with In-N-Out fries is that they tend to be limp – at least at the several In-N-Outs I’ve been to. My fries should not be limp, and ideally they should be crispy.
Chalk me up as a vote for Fatburger, double with an egg is unbeatable, although in-n-out puts up a good fight.
In the Valley I think all In-n-out’s are outdoor only, but in valencia there is an indoor one and here in Westwood there is an indoor one.
Alright, now that I go to UCLA I’ve been declaring it the best school ever and it never dawned on my why till this thread. I now live on campus I can walk to an In-n-out in 4 minutes and a Fatburger in 6 minutes, in-n-out open till 1, fatburger open till 4. Does life get any sweeter, I don’t think so!
Damn! I would have tried that.
I’ve been vegetarian for years, so I never bothered to go to In ‘n’ Out. And there was one up on Foothill Blvd., in the La Crescenta part of Glendale, near where I used to live. Everyone else went there, and made a big deal of it. It always had a long line of cars.
I did go get a chocolate shake at In ‘n’ Out the last time I was back home, though. Nice shake. Next time I’ll check out the grilled cheese, or the “Valley Style”.
As far as FatBurger, never been there.
