I had for dinner this evening a fine meal prepared by the good folks over at In-N-Out burger. I noticed that on the inside bottom lip of my milkshake cup, there was written “Proverbs 3:5”
“Interesting,” thought I. I had noticed some time ago “John 3:16” in the same location on a soda cup, and figured they had decided it was time for a change. Then, on the back of the burger wrapper, I spotted “Nahum 1:7.”
“Ah ha! They have numerous passages they want people to read,” I realized. Then I got to wondering: Why?
Looking up the indicated verses in my King James Bible, I found:
Proverbs 3:5- Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
John 3:16- For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Nahum 1:7- The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.
Now, these are all ringing endorsements for God, but beyond that, don’t relate to one another, much less fast food hamburgers. Clearly In-N-Out is trying to spread the word (on the side of the bag, it says they donate to the Salvation Army, the Los Angeles Mission and a few other places, which I don’t remember and have thrown out the bag), but why? Are the owners deeply religious? Did the cup company cut them a deal if they’d include Bible passages? Anyone know?
