As some of you know, my and jackelope’s mother had a bone marrow transplant last year. She has sinced returned to Orlando and has been in recovery, all was well such that she was even allowed to resume eating vegetables and fruits! Something she had been denied for over six months.
As it happens, she began showing signs of a slight fever a few days ago. The next day they admitted her to the hospital for monitoring. The fever had been come and go but today it seems pretty constant. She has also developed a rash which we think is GVHD, though we’re not sure yet.
Overall this isn’t something too terribly bad. It’s just a sign that all is not well and the docs are more than up to caring for her.
But it’s Valentine’s day and I really wish mom wasn’t in the hospital. She and dad should be able to go out and enjoy the day, rather than being in the hospital.
I’m sort of down and could use some good mojo being sent my way. And some prayers to speed my and jackelope’s ma’s healing.
hang in there (((hugs))) sorry to hear about your mum’s illness.
valentine’s is all commerical hype anyway, i’m sure your mum and dad can have a special day to celebrate her feeling better again when that day comes (which it will!)
your in my thoughts
You are going to make your mom a silly construction paper “Valentimes” card, right? With your huge grown-up handprint on it in chocolate pudding or tempera paint? It’ll be her best Valentine in years, I guarantee it.
Just remember a little GVHD is a good thing. The patients who never have any are more likely to relapse. So, think of this little bump in the road on Valentine’s Day as an inconvenient gift.
My thoughts are with you. Stay strong.
PICUnurse makes a good point. I was told GVHD can help kill off any remaining bad cells by a hematologist who talked to my class recently. Hope that your mom feels better soon.
