In praise of fish tacos...

Oh man, talk about digging up a craving. I haven’t had a fish taco in ages–they were a staple of my diet for a very long time, and I think I burned out on them after a while. My favorites were from a little hole-in-the-wall place in Norwalk (I think? I grew up in Lakewood/Long Beach), but the fish was deep-fried hunks, rather than grilled (this was back in the 80’s).

I think I know what I’m going to do for dinner tomorrow.

And you couldn’t be more right about using Cholula. For stuff like tacos, it just doesn’t compare to anything else out there.

I think it is a euphemism for ‘vagina’ - I hope that isn’t TMI for you…

When it comes to fish tacos there is ONE and only ONE name: Rubio’s. I lived on Rubio’s fish tacos (and burritos) while in college in San Diego. I nearly wept with joy when they finally opened one in my current hometown in NorCal last year. Fish tacos are their claim to fame and all other restaurant’s fish tacos are pale imitators.

And no, I am not a paid spokesperson for Rubio’s, just a very satisfied customer.
Damn, now I gotta go get me some after typing this post…

Rubios’s fish tacos, at the Murph (I refuse to relinquish the stadium’s true name to a sponsor), on a sunny day. The Padres lose, but who cares?

Doesn’t the cabbage and lime just make them YUMMY? Mmmmmmmmmm.

Salmon Tacos with mango butter salsa. Yummmmm!!

I get them at Taco Mesa in Orange County, California.

Mmmm - right around the corner from me, within walking distance of my house, is Taqueria del Sol. Regardless of what else I order, I always have at least one fish taco: “Tilapia dipped in an egg wash rolled in corn masa and bread crumbs and deep-fried. Served with poblano tartar sauce and pickled jalapeños.” (Description from the menu) They are the best! Especially when washed down with one of TdS’s signature “Westside” margaritas.
