In praise of Fountains of Wayne's song "Subaru"

Pretty much a perfect power-pop song. Indelibly catchy, rocking, with nerd-perfect story lyrics and all the right highs and lows in the song structure. You’d swear that Cheap Trick played it at Budokan - but it doesn’t sound simply like a pseudo-70’s retread - only that they wanted that feel for their song…and Rick Nielsen, while a great songwriter and guitarist, could never write brilliant lyrics as arch and fun as this while still making them so easy to hum along to…

I hope they make a TON of cash when Subaru buys it for commercial use.

I was re-visiting this thread about songwriting and realized that it doesn’t get much better than FoW’s late '92, baby blue - Subaru!

Check it out! The whole new CD, Traffic and Weather, is wonderful…

While we disagree on the CD (I think “Traffic and Weather” is just alright), “92 Subaru” is hands down the best song on the CD.

Those guys have pretty much got it goin’ on.

This is why I love this place…I didn’t even know there was a new FoW CD out, but of course someone does and mentions a song and now I have to have it. Mr.stretch will be stoked!

Thanks again, Dopers.

My work is done here. Onward!
