Our local farmers’ market reopens Sunday, June 2nd. I’m so excited! I miss the farmers’ market so much.
Sundays, during farmers’ market season, meant homemade pasta sauce, fresh cooked beans with smoked neck bones or hamhocks, kale and mustard greens with sauteed shallots, bacon and neckbones or hamhocks and beautiful salads topped with fresh grilled shrimp and asiago cheese.
And the pastries and fresh breads and oh, oh, oh the fruit! Jonna Gold apples are SO yummy and seckel pears are so pretty on a cheese platter. And the cheese guy, bless his soul. He sells goats’ milk brie. That is THE best brie, bar none. I almost forgot the apple cider! Mmmmmmmm apple cider. And the couple that sells homemade chocolate chip cookies <drool!>
During the winter I bought two large canvas bags for shopping at the farmers’ market. I am SO ready.
Juanita, is that the Farmer’s Market in Fell’s Point?
There is a wonderful one where my mother buys most of her groceries, in a Penna. town near where she lives. A lot of the vendors are Amish: meat & poultry, fruits & vegetables, baked goods, right from the farm. They mentally consign us to hell, of course, but they make sure we’ll go there well-nourished!
Farmers’ market here in Chicago started two weeks ago. It’s not up to full strength yet, though. I usually come home on summer Thursdays loaded down with bunches of flowers, fresh asparagus, artichokes, strawberries, peppers, and of course tomatoes. This year I’m going to try and grow some of my own veggies but oh how I love the farmers’ market!
Rather lucky here. We live in a market town so the stalls are full 2-3 days per week - year around. Though the grocery store is just around the corner I greatly enjoy buying a huge fresh loaf of bread for 50 pence, 2 dozen cobs (rolls) for £1…ooh and the fresh fruit and veg - can’t brag enough…
