In Taffy 3 in WW2, did Evans order the Johnston to attack independent of Sprague's orders?

Ever since reading Hornfischers book “Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors” I always thought it was settled that Captain Evans took the initiative himself for the USS Johnston to break away and start a torpedo run against the incoming Japanese fleet, against Commander Clifton Sprague’s orders to continue to provide smoke cover for the escort carriers. Wikipedia’s article on the Battle Off Samar also backs this up.

However twice recently I’ve heard contrary opinions, the National World War 2 Museum in New Orleans has an entire video in the museum about The Battle Off Samar and in that they credit Sprague with ordering the Johnston to launch a counter attack. In addition, I watched the documentary Hero Ships about the USS Samuel B. Roberts and they also credit Sprague for ordering the counter attack. Is this some new info or is this all Samuel B Roberts disinformation since I now both them and the USS Johnston crews have claimed stuff that one ship did the other did first (since I remember initially it was claimed that Evans on the Johnston gave that speech about “We will do what damage we can” when really it was the USS Samuel B. Roberts.)

From what I read, the answer is kinda both. Sprague ordered the DD’s to “cover” and “make smoke” and even do a torpedo attack, and Evans decided the best way to cover was to attack thru the smoke pretty much on his own. This was likely more than Sprague had envisioned, but not quite a direct insubordinate move.

I like this reading:

This is when Halsey threw his hat onto the deck and jumped up and down on it.

FWIW, I’m firmly convinced Evans led the charge on his own initiative, inspiring Sprague to order the rest of the screen to join the attack.

And I’m also convinced the official U. S. Navy history will always credit the entire charge to Taffy 3’s leadership.
