In which HurricaneDitka makes an announcement about his feelings on Trump

In the past you said that you supported Trump because you felt he would put forward policies that you favored/supported. But the above listed character flaws were a pre-existing condition when he was just a candidate. Yet, you supported him as a nominee then and well into his presidency (IIRC). What was the turning point/event for you, specifically?

I don’t think “turning point” is the right description. These are feelings I’ve long had about Trump (and I’m pretty sure I’ve occasionally voiced them on the SDMB). I don’t like him personally, and there are things about his administration / presidency I don’t like. There are lots of other people that I think would do a better job. Hillary Clinton is not on that list.

While I dislike some aspects / decisions, I don’t dislike all of his actions, and when his actions aligns with my preferred policies, you should still expect to see me enthusiastically supporting them. When they don’t, I’ll probably be more muted / sullen. For example, if RBG retires and Trump nominates someone from his list to replace her, I’ll probably be doing cartwheels in the yard. And when I see people resorting to silly hyperbole, I’ll still call it out. I expect that for a great many Dopers that will still look like “reliably carry[ing] water for him”. shrug

The only reason to oppose that strategy would be for people who cannot get past their loathing of Trump, Trumpism, and Trump voters, and want to deliver a smackdown in the form of impeachment and prison (hello angry unhinged white women). I absolutely share that unhinged personal hatred, but I think some strategic restraint would be beneficial.

So there are silver linings to the Trump presidency, though of course I mean them all as back-handed compliments.

In light of this, I think there’s a good strategic case for letting Trump serve a full 4-year term, to get bloodied by scandal, failure, and the impeachment process, and let the Republican party shake itself to pieces like a lawnmower with a bent shaft.

The only reason to oppose that strategy would be for people who cannot get past their loathing of Trump, Trumpism, and Trump voters, and want to deliver a smackdown in the form of impeachment and prison (hello angry unhinged white women). I absolutely share that unhinged personal hatred, but I think some strategic restraint would be beneficial.

The reasons to oppose the strategy:

It won’t work. Trump will be reelected.
It won’t work. Trump won’t be reelected but the GOP will be just fine.
It will work, but the damage done will be irreparable.
It will work, but the broken GOP will have further ramifications.
It will work, but the unstable right will use it as fuel for more extreme parties to arise.
