In your face, Westboro BC!

Now I hate giving those people what they want (publicity) as much as anyone, but I wanted to share this:

House Across From Westboro Baptist Is Painted With Gay Pride Rainbow Colors

Aaron Jackson …is following through on a project that started about six months ago when he decided to buy a house across the street from the infamous church in Topeka, Kan.

Jackson and volunteers began painting the house in the colors of the gay pride rainbow. Once they are done, they will also add a huge rainbow flag in front of the house.

His charity is called Planting Peace, and most of its work is in Peru. Take a look at the photo, it’s cool.

How long do you think it’ll take before they file some sort of lawsuit or something about the condition of the home and its effect on surrounding home values? Or not being zoned correctly or some shit. I’m sure they’re planning something. I can’t imagine they’re going to just shrug and leave it there.

I’ll contribute to the defense fund.

AngelSoft, I wasn’t supposing this was some sort of overwhelming permanent victory against WBC. Just a nice, peaceful, in-your-face gesture.

I think Gandhi would have approved.

Likewise. I will be looking for the donations page for Planting Peace tonight when I’m off work.

Donations page is here (I hope this is ok to post, I did not get prior permission, but since it’s not for me and I’m not affiliated I thought it would be ok).

Personally, I am happy that they have left these fine people alone: http://www.landoverbaptist.org/

I’m going to have to go check that house out with my own eyes. I drive by the WBC several times a week because it’s on a direct route from my home to the dog park. I know the neighborhood well.

It’s kind of funny. The city block the church and it’s homes and compound is on is shared by one home that doesn’t belong to them. The WBC’s tall security/privacy fence has to make a dogleg around this other home. I wonder what it’s like living so near to them?

It’s funny - they’re having an interview on a radio show right now about the topic.

Megan and Grace Phelps-Roper (Freddie’s grandaughters) having left their family’s cult after discussions via Twitter with
Jewlicious’s David Abitbol.

I like the gesture, but let’s not forget that the WBC has no power or relevance at all. Better they do this across the street from anti-gay legislators.

That will be the biggest funding drive the organization (PlantPeace?) could ask for. They’d be in the newspapers continuously and there were be plenty of people who’d never heard of them willing to donate just to get back at WBC.

What can WBC do? They are also a non-profit there across the street. If there are structural problems, I’m sure donors will get them fixed.

This really is a great way to stick it to WBC because anything they do will just drive more donations to the group.

This is the coolest fucking thing ever. I’m in love.

Frankly I’m amazed that the WBC is still physically standing and Fred is still breathing.

I just drove by there earlier, about 7:20PM, on the way to the dog park.

The house is on the east side of them, so it’s front door faces west, directly towards the WBC’s entrance. If you’ve never seen a picture of the WBC, it’s not a regular looking church, but was developed out of Fred’s house. A tall privacy fence surrounds the property, and the other houses that belong to family members are dotted along it. There’s a pool in there too, which they once tried to get classified as a part of the church(for baptisms you know) so it wouldn’t be taxable.

The rainbow house is not large, but rather attractive, and not as garish as one might expect. If they put up a large flag pole with a rainbow flag, that would just be a perfect accompaniement to the WBC flag pole, which has a city of Topeka flag flying above a US flag, both upside down of course.

Thanks for reporting live from the scene! I thought it looked rather pretty and indeed not at all garish.

I might like my house to look like that even if it didn’t make a cool statement. But then I like kinda tacky things (ask me about the bobblehead white tiger wearing a gold chain that lives on my dashboard). And I looove colors.

This. Elegantly said!

And the hits just keep coming in.
