I know the Google ads can get out of control sometimes, but it would sure be nice if the big banner ad at the top of the main page (www.straightdope.com) was work-safe.
I didn’t appreciate firing up the Straight Dope in my store today and seeing “No Shame Wednesday: Bondage a Go-Go” at the top of the screen in huge black and red letters.
Tell you what Invisible Wombat, next time you’re in Chicago I’ll buy you a drink at the Exit. That place is a riot, and I know they would be in to invisible marsupials. It’s cool like that.
I’m kind of nervous about drinking with a cluricaun. Would you actually leave me anything? Would I just be getting flavored water?
It wasn’t a Google ad, Arnold. Just a big ol’ banner. Luckily, all the customers happened to be looking the other direction at the time. And “bondage a go-go”? As I understand it, the thigh boots need to be in fluorescent colors instead of plain black. Other than that, you got me (so to speak).
I didn’t see the banner ad myself, InvisibleWombat, but from the way you describe it, are you sure it wasn’t work safe? The generic “My Yahoo!” home page ( http://my.yahoo.com/ ) has samples from “Most Viewed Photos” from Yahoo!, and some of those are pretty risqué by US standards (bikini fashion model week for example.) I would assume that a large US corporation like Yahoo! would make sure that the items offered to you to customize your home page would be work safe by a “reasonable” standard. The words “bondage a go-go” displayed on a homepage seem less “offensive” than some of the pictures I see on Yahoo!.
I didn’t see the banner ad, either, but if it’s anything like their web site, I think you’re overreacting. Or you shouldn’t be on the internet at work, because your work environment is far too restrictive for images routinely seen online. Even their photo albums are work safe, IMHO.
(God, I haven’t been to Exit for years. They all look so young and cute! But, uh…if anyone knows this guy, give him my email, OK? (Is that for real?!))
