This is my first pit thread, but I’m pretty sure it belongs here.
I just wanna bitch about my French Grammar teacher (3060 for anyone who cares) at LSU. My major’s in French and up till now I’ve gotten all A’s in French classes (I have only 3 left till I graduate). However, I’ll be lucky to PASS this course. Our teacher gave a 30 point curve on the last test we took… and the highest grade was STILL in the 70’s. He does this every time.
It’s understandable that foreign language students should be required to learn the grammar of that language better than native speakers… but to learn it all in one class is ridiculous. Also, I agree that it’s good that we’re forced to speak French during the class, but when I have some questions I just can’t formulate in French, I have to just not learn the answers. He will absolutely not allow English questions NOR will he give us enough time to studder through our questions in French. It’s ridiculous!
However, the worst part of the class is the workload. Thursday he assigned to us 40 pages of grammar exercises and a 3 page essay which were all due today. Yesterday, upon checking my mail (not email), I found even more work he mailed us which was due today. He sent it Saturday, knowing we’d get it Monday at the earliest. How inconsiderate!!!
Damn. Is there anyone over this guy’s head you can go to to complain about him? Not allowing English questions is one thing, but not allowing you to try to formulate the question in French is ridiculous. The whole point of French classes taught exclusively in French is that by being forced to stumble though the language you gain something. Getting as far as “Est-ce que …” before being cut off by this asshole teaches you nothing.
Also, could you maybe pick up a grammar book or a tutor or an exchange student to get your questions answered outside of class, in a more reasonable fashion? I can recommend a few books, but I don’t know the nature/complexity of your questions, nor what books you’re using, nor the feasibility of your ravaging Amazon.com for some overnight orders.
I’m seriously thinking about going to the head of the department, but I figure I should talk to him first. He really isn’t a bad guy - just a shitty idealistic teacher!
