She originated the role in 1950, and her voice isn’t quite what it was then (I have the LP), but DAMN! Not just her singing, but her ACTING! As far as opera goes, I’ve never seen anyone better!
She also played the Mother Superior in the original cast of “The Sound of Music”. And she died just over a year ago.
