Independence movements with true intentions of joining another country

The unification of Italy in the 19t Century was a long and messy affair, but one part of it was the rebellion in the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, which was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire.

There was an independence movement in Sicily after World War 2 that intended Sicily to break from Italy and join the United States as they felt the Americans would care more about them than the Italian government.
