India, and Indians.

While I don’t know much about India, may I just add how sad it is that someone dosent want to learn even a little about their heritage. It is part of YOU, wether others, (or yourself) like it or not.

Did you not read the OP? The boy essentially stated that he’s not interesed in the facts. He’s apparently only interested in spouting his prejudice against India.

I’m breathless

[quote[After careful review, I have come to the conclusion that there is nothing that can be asked that will not elicit a response that makes you look like anything but an asshole.[/quote]

Bullshit. Let me say that again: bullshit. Your observational skills are lacking in this thead. I say that based on your comment just above. Again: did you not read the OP? Did you not understand it?

Bullshit. 100% is what always is.

Go get a dictionary, Doors. You’ve just showed that you don’t know the meaning of either “always” or “regularity.”

How about you fuck off until you actually learn something?

I’m not impressed with what you think. I just now see that it’s not of much caliber.

p.s. 16 years old is certainly old enough to know what a prejudiced remark is. That ain’t “boy” AFAIC, it’s “young man.”

Bullshit. Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. In no way did Teelo say he wasn’t interested in the facts. You are being an ass, and if anyone was guilty of not reading this thread it is you as evidenced by your inability to catch the Teelo/Wearia thing. Find me where Teelo said he wasn’t interested in the facts. You can’t, because he didn’t.

You know, Doors; I don’t want to get into an argument with you over this. “Always” didn’t sit too well with me, especially when I’m sure you’re aware of the times I’ve thanked people, complimented them, supported them, and so on on this very site. My next post after that long one showed where I’m coming from. a 16 year old is certainly aware of, or should be, prejudice and the kind of reactions that can be expected from other people. It’s not all that much unlike that guy who was pretending to set fire to his sneakers on the plane just recently.

Incorrect, Beeble: “Now before you…,” “But I hate the background they give me,” “I still think it is a slum though,” and “If or when I have kids I won’t tell them about India” all tell you what about the poster concerned? & forgive me for not having the same mind-reading capacity of others…I took the name to the left of the post as the name of the person who posted it–kind of like the thing’s supposed to indicate. And you might want to read tiggeril’s post for a bit of edification on how someone can (quite rightly, IMHO) perceive the OP and the OP’s followup posts.

Tiggeril said pretty much the same thing I said in my original post (the second reply in the thread), I guess we perceived it the same way. Do I need edification on how I myself perceived it? What’s your point? Or did you just forget to read the relevant parts of the thread again?

Uh, Monty? Did you miss this part of my post?

Trust me. I said the same (or at least similar) things as Teelo did when I was 16. Also trust me when I say that being advised to slap myself upside the head and that my opinions were the result of rank prejudice would hardly have changed my mind.

Time. It takes time, Monty. Believe it or not, your words will not be enough. Especially if they’re as hostile as they have been.

Wow, I was overwhelmed with the recent responses. And to Airman Doors, Jovan , Beeblebrox and tiggeril I thank you for sticking up for me. Not choosing sides but reading the facts and making the right choice about whom should be defended shows alot about who you are
And Monty, relax.
I used to have a friend like you who would make ANY excuse to argue, whether it be the weather or perhaps when the sun went down. The point is he had a person in his family who also made any excuse to argue, so by example he also did so. This guy I knew had many great qualities but the one that blew all the good qualities away way his urge to argue.
To end the story,
Soon after he became 15 and maturity came around he stopped and is able to have a civil conversation without proving who is right and who is wrong.

Hint Hint

You sound like a typical colonial brainwashed Indian. Please return to treating your own people like shit. Starting young at 16 huh?

Yes, everything Indian is abhorrent. You poor, poor dear. You aren’t like those pakis, you’re our special little boy, a high-class nigger. Now go back to sweeping the floor sahib.

You aren’t proud to be Indian? Indians aren’t educated? Hmm, last time I checked my culture valued education. Guess all those engineers and doctors don’t exist huh? Maybe the ratio is lower because, let’s see, the country is majority white? As well as those people who leave India with just the shirts on their backs and become successful in the West.

Indians in India have the “get away from me look”? Perhaps grinding poverty soured them while you were sipping your iced tea. Please check back later.

Nobody cares about the accomplishments of India because all they see is your brown skin. The mark that associates you with poverty. Don’t like it? Tough. That’s the way the world is. Do you think anyone gives a fuck about the brilliant mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan? Or the fact that gasp non-white people can actually be intelligent?

I’ve met many Indians like you. It’s called the colonial mentality. Always negative towards your own people while simulatenously elevating different people .

You want something to have pride in? Have pride in your own accomplishments and stop denigrating people that you know nothing about. India is not all poor, there is a thriving middle and upper class there as well. Do poor whites offend you as well?

An old Indian joke:

Scientists were conducting an experiment on mice. So they collected mice from all parts of the world. Mice from China, Africa etc. All the jars had lids except the one from India. Puzzled, one scientist asked the other why.

“It’s because when one indian mouse tries to escape the other one pulls him back in”

You’re the future brown-nigger.

 Don’t hold back or anything, Slicky. This Teelo person’s getting a hell of an introduction to the boards.

Beeblebrox, the following statements made by Teelo suggest, to me, that s/he is not interested in the facts:

and…

and this was after all the replies s/he got to his/her OP up to those points in the thread.

the teelo/wearia mix up had nothing to do with these statements made by teelo.

somebody interested in facts would, in my personal opinion, have responded differently and with a more open mind.

p.s. fact: the country is not a slum. parts of it may be. the country is definitely not.

Wow. And I thought I had seen everything.

What the hell was that, Slicky?

Oh, Slicky, Slicky, Slicky. Read over your post again. You’ve named yourself representative of “your” culture.

Read it over. The contempt dripping from every syllable. The palpable hostility. You want first-generation kids to respect something that can spawn someone like you?

Just what do you think you were doing with that lovely piece of work you spewed onto the screen?

Actually, you know what? I’m not done yet.

Slicky, you might be a troll for all I know, but if you are truly some random pissed-off Indian, I have to say that you are the epitome of everything I rebelled against when I was younger.

The smug tone about “engineers and doctors.”

The same whimpering about “colonialism.”

The same whining about “brown skin.”

This crap:

This is the desi version of the American blowhards who insist that any criticism of the government is akin to treason.

And you, Slinkyji, are doing what is indeed a great culture even more of a disservice than Teelo. He (she?) is young still. He can learn. His mind may change. But you? I’ve heard what you’ve said before, coming from my parents, from their friends. You’re stuck in your little world filled with hatred and outrage at the “colonial-minded.”

The presence of a middle class does not make a culture great. The number of people who leave a nation to succeed elsewhere does not make that nation’s culture great. How many mathematicians a nation has produced does not make a culture great. The color of a nationality’s skin does not make its culture great.

What does? The way the next generation perceives that culture determines not only its longetivity, but its greatness. And the way the next generation sees its culture depends on how the previous generation represents it.
How have you represented your culture, Slinky? An entire generation wants to know.

Ok I think its about time for me to comment. The real me, not Teelo posing as me.

Yes I’m Indian too. I don’t see it as a disability. There is strenght in diversity. I have the privledge to have a parent from a whole different place. A place that had a history before we had a culture. My mother has told me about the children that worked as servents for them. I’ve heard about the men on street corners with monkey trying to earn money for food. There is poverty. But there is poverty everywhere. World wide.

Truth is, I probably wouldn’t survive the education system in India. I have talked to my cousins who still live there. Anything above 70% in nearly impossible. 80%s or 90%s are a myth. Its unheard of. Its not that there unintelligent. Its just that everyone is educated. There is no special treatment for anyone. There are too many students. My cousin had 67%, he was on the verge of not passing. Yet if he came here, he would be recieving high 80s. He had to study everynight to keep up. Before exams he didn’t sleep just so he could study. They’re not allowed to use calculators. Sine, Cosine and tangent have to be done with a pencil and paper. There is no room for slackers. No one can slack off. If you do there is no chance of you passing. None.
So now everyone has recieved the same education. The same classes. So an employer gets say 20 applications with the same credentials. So who does he hire? There is no real difference between any of them. Now here is where the problem is.

Bribes.

Thats the only way to put yourself above those others who apply for that same job. So by bribing 19 other people don’t get a job. Even though they are educated. So they end up driving taxi’s or begging. Its not their fault. There are just to many people and not enough jobs. Its sad really.
I personally don’t mind the food. Some of it I stay away from. But its no worse than eating a reheated beef mush covered in grease, wrapped in bleached bread.
Sure there are people out there that see India as a slum. There are also people out there who think people in Canada live in Igloos and Americans are redneck terrorists. Does that make them right? No of course not. You can’t judge a society if you haven’t seen it for yourself.

I’m reminded of something Jon Stewart said recently. While talking to Antonio Bandares he commented that USA is still a teenager compared to other cultures. They waste food, have incredible amounts of garbage and bicker with themselves. I see India as a middle ager. Its trying to make up for mistakes made in the past.

Every country has its problems. Its up to people to see them for what is good about them rather than exploit what is bad. The glory we have in N. America can’t last forever. Its all downhill from here. But it is only in failure that we can learn. Thats what India is doing now. Learing and growing. One day, one day India may become a resurected culture. And we will wear their clothes and listen the their music. Its possible, but still a long way away.

Slicky, I see where your coming from. You see an arrogant kid who has turned his back on your culture and believed they stereotypes. Yes there unfortuantely is racism. Some people would rather see a white scientist do good rather than an indian one. It is unfortunate but true. But Slicky, your not helping. Hostility is not the answer. I’ll assume your from India right? So what is it really like? All we have to go on is what the media tells us. By being hostile your just re-enforcing the stereotypes. What do you think Teelo will think if the only indian who replyed called him a “brown nigger”? Do you think it will show him that India is a great place with many great things? No, its will make him think Indians are mean spirited pricks that do nothing but insult those who question them. Lighten up. Educate us. Obviously there is a lot you could teach us.

Tigerlil:

Goddammit, I’m not some FOB reppin’ India.

I wasn’t whining at all about disadvantages. I said “don’t like it, tough, that’s the way the world is”. I don’t buy into the victim mentality. I don’t have a problem with white people at all. Actually I’ve found that white people treat me kinder than my own people, and I’ve only dated white girls. Teelo said that Indians aren’t smart, and

That’s why I said the ratio is less because the country is majority white. I realize that not all Indians are intelligent. It’s like any other society, intelligence is distributed differently throughout all population centers regardless of race. He also said people he meets don’t care about “indian accomplishments” because all they see is the poverty. That’s why I said “brown skin” because it associates you with poverty.

Of course India is not perfect. India is one of the most racist, fucked up societies on earth. Notice how all the people on Indian TV are light-skinned? All the repressiveness, inter-faith/caste bullshit, religious fanatics, weird marriage pratices, rampant corruption/bribery etc, dumbass airheaded indian girls who live in a fantasy world of shopping and bollywood. (JK!!)

But, come on, his post was basically a heritage bash fest. Teelo said:
" I wish I wasn’t Indian"

That’s why I told him to have pride in himself, not others. He can at least say one positive thing about India. Hmm, the Taj Mahal is nice. There ya go.

All right, I shouldn’t have called him brown-nigger. Hell, you can be a dot-head or a sand-nigger if you want. My treat.

I meant to the average racist (not all whites! do not take offense!) you’re just another nigger, so stop acting like you’re better than the “niggers in India”.

And Teelio said:

You fucking idiot, it’s because they’re POOR. Should they start doing 80s dance moves or whatever the fuck to applease you?
Dumbass cum-slurping party bitch son of an sheep-sodomizing hillbilly ( no offense to rednecks, love those overalls) who’s married to cross-dresser.

Anyone else who got their panties in a twat, i’m sorry I’ll smile for you.

Well, first of all, if you don’t like his opinion, tough, that’s the way it is. Why buy into his dismissal? Please. That’s hardly the worldly statement you think it is.

That’s a curious statement from someone who, in his last post, condemned the OP for being “negative towards your own people while simulatenously elevating different people.” It sounds almost… colonial.

Is that Teelo’s problem, or a problem with not only representation by foreign media, but self-representation by Indians? Why are you blaming him for something that is much more insidious than a teenager’s opinions?

Well, I wish I wasn’t short, but I can say that I have nice hair. So what? Whenever I want to whine about being short I have to mention my hair so that it’s not a bash fest? Look, I’m all for balance, and as much as I hate to resurrect this old argument, a rant is a rant.

This makes no sense to me. Why cater to the racists? And if it’s all the same to you, I’m neither a dot-head nor a sand-nigger, I’m an American with an Indian background. Look, I know you’re trying to be sarcastic ( I hope, anyway), but you’re not helping your argument any.

One usually puts panties ON a twat, and gets them IN a twist. Just FYI. (The logistics for the alternative are rather disturbing.)

Xash: I am male, I made that clear in my first post, the problems with most of these peoples arguments is that they don’t read every word so they don’t know the whole story, so they get mad and clal me names like a child, which brings me to my next topic…
(Oh, and give me facts, if you have any.)

Slicky, I am shocked they still make people like you.
Or should I say Monty? There is a good chance that Monty being outnumbered, made a new nickname and directly came here. I wonder if Slicky will dissapear after this thread dies? Having a lack of an e-mail address, no profile only 2 posts, in THIS thread. Well it sure as hell can be possible.
Anyway whoever you are,

Don’t put words in my mouth, telling people I said that Indians aren’t smart. I said NOT ALL OF THEM. Leaving hundreds of millions of geniuses.

And look at yourself, calling me racist names? A nigger? A dot-head? A sand nigger? A paki, and Sahib? Are you mental? Did your parents call you names growing up? It’s not the right thing to do, du’h.
You are racist, people like you are the slum of society, and I say get help. You need it, find it, and take as much as you can.

It can be, but I wouldn’t bet on it. I don’t know Monty too well, but making a “sock,” as it’s called here, is highly frowned upon and cause for banning. Besides, the writing styles are completely different.

You are way out of line here. Don’t accuse people publicly of sockpuppetry, or even privately to the Mods unless you have some actual evidence.

Anjali, I’ve thought about a comment you made earlier for a couple of days now.

I wish I understood what it was like to be Indian, either Indian but raised outside of India, or truly a native. But there is no way I can do that. You might as well ask me to know what it is to be a Jew, or a Muslim, or an Eskimo.

I can only go from what I read of Indian history, Indian culture, religion, and customs. I have read a bit, although much was a decade or more ago. And I know very little today.

All of my IRL Indian friends are IT professionals. Every last one of them. This naturally does give me a slanted view.

Outside of work, where do I encounter other Indians? At the restaurant I eat at weekly.

You’re right. I really am clueless as to what it means to be Indian.

Anrikki is Indian because it fit well with the background plot of my story, tying together two important threads. I really wanted to make her an Indian raised almost entirely in the US, and thus she really was quite unaware of her culture, background, and the customs and traditions of the elders of her family.

Looks like I will succeed, since I likely am an ignorant person who will end up offending Indians by trying to portray a character like Anrikki. So I think I have decided to kill my story as a result, since I would end up offending. You must believe, it was not my intent by any means. :frowning:
