For the record, as we start this, I might not respond to this thread automatically, nor do I have any real answers to what I’m asking. I am merely posing a question, one that is likely to delve into debate, and this is the most serious forum for my query. Now, we all know of the recent turmoil in Pakistan, with President Perez Musharaff’s actions in imposing, then lifting, martial law, postponing recent Parliamentary elections, and his lack of will it seems in pursuing terrorist threats, specifically in the North Waziristan area. Coupled with the recent assassination of Benazir Bhutto, and the potential for another military coup in the event that Musharaff is removed from power, it would seem that Pakistan is in a right mess. Add in the fact that they are, in fact, nuclear-armed and we have even more of a problem.
What concerns me, though, isn’t Pakistan directly. What has me curious is what they’re nuclear-armed neighbor and chronic enemy to the east has been doing about all this. Normally, Pakistan sneezes and India is on high-alert. The news these days, however, India has rarely, if ever, been mentioned. What have they been up to? What is their reaction to the current turmoil? What steps are they going to take in the event of overthrow or renewed military rule?
