Indian spice badiani khatai. What is it other than a flower?

I’ve got this recipe for a Garam Masala I’m trying to make. In fact if you google badiani khatai, this heavily scaled down recipe is one of the only things that comes up. I know that the spice is a brown flower. Of course it is the only thing in the recipe that I haven’t been able to translate. I see that it might not be specifically Indian, since the name comes up as Iranian-Pakistani as well.

Is there anybody that knows more than I do? Can I use something else? Can I actually get it someplace? Otherwise, I’m just leaving it out.

This sounds like a job for Cafe Society! Moving.

Googling “badiani khatai” gives me a botanical name of “Illicium verum”. Googling that gives me star anise which is apparently common in Chinese cooking.

That help?

I couldn’t find anything. Thanks, I think that fits the description.
